Swapping tales and snaring rabbits with Gerald and Preston

One of my favorite things about traveling through the boreal forest by dog team is the wonderful people that we meet. Last winter Frosty and I met Gerald and Preston when we were in Grand Rapids, Manitoba. This winter we stopped in to visit them during our drive to Norway House, and they decided to accompany us to Norway House to visit family and see us off.

We met Preston and Gerald last year in Grand Rapids. This year they continue to help us out in northern Manitoba.

Gerald sets a trap in Norway House
Gerald and Preston have been living in Northern Manitoba their whole lives and have been able to teach us a lot about traveling in this area. Preston takes off on a yearly walk through the bush each spring traveling about 30 miles each day for a few weeks. They have both worked as commercial fishermen, and it is easy to stay up late listening to their many stories.

The night before we left Norway House Gerald took me into the woods, and taught me how to set rabbit snares. As we walked through the deep snow and dense bush Gerald watched for signs in the snow left by passing animals and chose two locations to set snares. In the morning Adam and Gerald returned to the bush to retrieve the snares and check for rabbits. They were sucessful and returned with a beautiful snowshoe hare. We sent the hare home with Gerald and Preston confident that with our new knowledge we will be able to snare our own rabbits. Two nights ago I set 3 snares in hopes of getting a rabbit, but was unsucessful. I will try again soon, and hopefully we will be able to have our first rabbit dinner soon thanks to Gerald and Preston!
