We have found that there are often several different routes that we can take from one village to the next. Please help us decide which route we should take.

A: Winter roads: these are roads that cars and trucks use to travel from community to community. These roads travel over the frozen rivers and lakes and are only open for about 2 months every year. The fastest, safest, and easiest way for us to travel from place to place would be on these winter roads. However, we are probably less likely to see animals along the road and it might take some of the adventure out of trip.

B: Lakes and Rivers: for thousands of years people have been using the lakes and rivers of the boreal forest as a giant travel network. We could follow the lakes and rivers from one community to the next portaging from one body of water to the next as necessary. This would probably be the hardest route, but would probably prove to be the most interesting and we would be more likely to see animals.

C: Trails through the woods: many of the hunters and trappers that live in this area maintain trails that wind their way though the bush. Another option would be for us to use these trails to travel from village to village. Using trapper trails and other trails would be a bit of a compromise between the winter road and following the lake and river systems.
