It felt so good to get back on the trail after spending several days in Garden Hill visiting with local students and teachers. We were anxious to get on the trail and
I jumped out of my sleepingbag at 5:40 AM. We were racing out of town an hour later as dawn began to break. We traveled 27 miles today over a beautiful series of lakes
rivers, and trappers' trails.

Signs of wildlife were abundant and after an hour of steady skiing we came to a narrow part of Island Lake where underwater currents keep the water from freezing all winter long.River Otters love places where the ice does not freeze, because it makes it easy
for them to fish for crayfish, mussels` and other tasty aquatic morsels.
River otters are the most playful animals in the boreal forest. In the winter they slide on their bellies on the ice to make travel much faster. In fact, when they get up enough
speed they can run and slide a distance of 27 feet!
Otters are part of the same family of animals as weasels, badgers, and pine martens known as mustelids. They have streamlined bodies that allow them to be excellent swimmers. They weigh between 11-30 pounds with the males weighing more than the females. Otters are dark brown with paler brown bellies.
