Today on our visit to Kistiganwacheeng Elementary, the local school in Garden Hill, Dave had the opportunity to interview a fifth grader. Students at this school speak Cree with each other, but classes are taught in English, so Dave didn't need a translator. Charlotte Holmes was the lucky student interviewee. She was very excited to talk with Dave. Here is what she said:

Where do you live?
Island Lake

What do you like to do for fun?
I like to go sliding (in Canada, it's called sliding, not sledding) down a big hill. I like to play outside. Sometimes we try to catch dogs and get them to pull us on a toboggan.

What is your favorite food?
Rice, ground beef, and corn.

Today we met Charlotte, a 5th grader in Garden Hill, Manitoba. She was nice enough to answer some of the questions we have received from students about what it is like to grow up here.

Charlotte's favorite subject is computers because she likes to go on the Internet and learn things. We hope she visits www.wildernessclassroom.com often during the adventure!

What kind of music do you like?
Eminem and Rap music

What is your favorite subject?
Computer class, because you can go on the Internet and find out stuff.

Do you have any brothers and sisters?
I have lots of brothers and sisters.

What do you want to do when you grow up?
I want to be a teacher who is responsible.

Words of advice:
Listen to your elders and parents and respect people.

After talking with Charlotte, we see that although life here in northern Manitoba seems different, the children enjoy similar things as you and I do. The Cree children here are extremely friendly and excited about seeing the dogs and learning about Wilderness Classroom. They also have tried to teach us a few phrases from their native language, "gum seen," for example, means "wait" in Cree. These students who may live hundreds (maybe even thousands) of miles away from you still go to similar schools, take similar classes, have similar friends, and lead similar lives as you do.
