Daily Dilemma

The Rainforest Project has deeply impacted both of our lives. Costa Rica is such an amazing place to explore, and the great thing about it is that there is tons of forests, animals, and plants left to explore. What have you learned about the rainforest during the past month? What things can you do, or have you done to protect it? What makes the rainforest worth protecting?

Catching some waves in Jaco

The last month has flown by, and I can not believe that the Rainforest Project is coming to an end. Last week, students decided that we should try boogie boarding so that is what we have been doing. We have spent the last two day relaxing in Jaco (Pronounced HA-ko), the surfing capital of Costa Rica. Our backs our sunburned, and our stomachs are bruised from hours spent "trying" to boogie board.

Dave wakes up and wonders where the waves are. We're camped only 50 feet from the Pacific Ocean!

This was my first time boogie boarding, and the waves have certainly gotten the best of me on many occasions. The hardest part is getting out past the breaking waves. From the beach you have to start walking out into the water carrying your board. The waves come crashing in, and by the time you are in chest-deep water it becomes really hard to keep your balance as the waves break over you.
However once you get past the breaking waves, you can rest and catch your breath as you wait for a good wave. When you find a wave you want to catch you have to start kicking and paddling as fast as you can. Then the wave picks you up, and if feels like you are flying. For a few seconds all of the bruises and tired muscles are forgotten.

We finally got to catch a few waves just before high tide today. We had to share the waves with about 60 other surfers.
Eric and I have thoroughly enjoyed the Rainforest Project, and we would like to thank you all for participating with us. We would also like to thank Pika and Ecoteach for all of their help and support. Finally, we would like to thank our parents, friends, private and corporate sponsors, and all of the other people who have helped us.

Keep exploring,

Dave
