Pescar a los Camarrones

We've been spending the past week exploring the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. While we were in Parismina I had the chance to go out into the ocean to fish for shrimp. Shrimp in Spanish are called camarrones (CAM-a-rron-es). Every October and November, the Caribbean sea gets calm. The waves are small enough where the local people don't have to worry about shark attacks or being carried out to sea by the strong rip-tides, so it is a great time to fish for shrimp.
When we woke up one morning in Parismina, we didn't see anyone. I thought everyone was either sleeping or had gone to church. It turns out that the entire town was down at the beach fishing for camarrones. To fish in Spanish is pescar (pez-CAR).
Fishing for shrimp in the Caribbean is done with small nets. Estella and I wandered into the sea about 200 feet out from shore. The ocean was still shallow enough to stand on the bottom. Estella threw the net out, and we each grabbed an end. While holding the net, we walked backwards, parallel to the shoreline. We probably only walked about 50 feet. In less than 5 minutes, Estella told me to let go. I didn't think that the net would have any shrimp in it, because we weren't out there very long. But when she pulled the net in, it had at least a few hundred camarrones in it.

What a catch! Frosty's net of shrimp wasn't quite this big, but pretty close!

Shrimping and fishing along the Caribbean coast gets the whole family involved.

The people of Parismina are very isolated from the rest of Costa Rica. The only way to access Parismina is by boat. Bringing in groceries every week is a very difficult, time-consuming, and expensive way to get food. Therefore the people rely on the shrimp to add to their food sources. And plus, there is nothing like eating fresh shrimp for a few meals! Many meals are made with shrimp, like ceviche (shrimp salsa), arroz con camarrones (shrimp with rice), shrimp soup, barbecued shrimp, and the list goes on and on. What's your favorite meal that uses shrimp? What animal family does a shrimp belong to?
