WE DID IT!
Today we skied the last few miles to the very south end of Lake
Winnipeg, completing the Bimaadaggako Adventure. It was a bittersweet
moment, as Dave and I realized that the life we had grown so accustomed
to for the past two months would quickly change.

Scott has been able to hitch a ride on top
of the toboggans. With a little tinkering we were able to construct
a comfortable seat. It was great having Scott along for the last
few days of the adventure.
|
This adventure has been amazing. Each day is full of
unexpected surprises as we meet new people, encounter new stretches
of forest, and learn a little more about ourselves, our environment,
and each other.
Winter travel is often heralded as isolated and lonely. Yet, with
the company of Saylix and Lichen, life on the trail was never lonely
or dull. They seemed to have enjoyed this trip almost more than Dave
and I did. Their reliable good mood, simple pleasures, and friendly
demeanors has made them the perfect traveling companions. |
|
This morning we woke up and took our time taking down camp. We
were reluctant for the adventure to end. Even though we've spent
the past two months in the wilderness, there is so much left to
enjoy, protect, and explore.
As we basked in the springtime sun, napping, and catching up on
some reading, we sadly realized it would be another year until winter's
beauty would coax us out in the wilderness. The snowshoes will be
hung up and made to wait patiently for the snow to fall again. It's
not too sad though. Just as spring marks the end of snowshoe season,
it also reminds us to take down the canoe and start planning summer
and fall wilderness adventures.

This monster carp weighted about 40 pounds!
The fishermen had a whole Bomber full of carp, which they will
sell for about 28 cents a pound.

This afternoon, as we made our way into Pine Falls,
we were greeted by a classroom of high school students from the school
in Powerview, Manitoba. Dean, our friend in Winnipeg, called the surrounding
schools and told them of our adventure. When the schools heard about
us, they decided to throw and impromptu welcoming party for us. They
drove to a small landing on Lake Winnipeg and waited for our arrival.
|
Tomorrow, we will give a school presentation
in Powerview and Pine Falls. Saylix and Lichen, the true stars of
the show, are eager to get to the school and meet the students. We're
excited to visit other schools in the upcoming weeks.
We are really appreciative of all of the support we've received from
schools, teachers, students, family, and friends. The Wilderness Classroom
would not exist if it weren't for your encouragement, enthusiasm,
and curiosity. Happy Trails! |
