When ever I am traveling the Eastern Shore of Lake Winnipeg
I always read
canoe
ing with the Cree. Eric Sevardeid (age 17), and Walter Port (age 19) paddled from their homes in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Hudson Bay in 1934. It is a truly amazing story that will fuel anyone's adventurous spirit. Having just explored Berens River, I thought that it would be a nice time to give their account of Berens River during the summer of 1934. In the company of Willi Everett, who was all dressed up for Sunday, we followed the twisting, well-beaten paths through the settlement in which the Crees lived. We strolled at a slow pace, while Willie described to us the varieties of spruce and pine around us and expounded at length upon the soothing effects of balsom pitch when applied to a cut or bruise-something we remembered......One does not have to visit California to see a nudists' colony. There is one in every Indian settlement in Canada,at least as far as the boys from age six to twenty are concerned. Of course, they don't go about the camp unclothed, but when they to the "ol' swimming hole," there's only one way to swim and that's in the "raw".
