Next week
we will be arriving at Berens River, a remote Cree village on the Eastern
Shore of Lake Winnipeg
. We have arranged to pick up supplies in Berens River,
but are not sure what else we should do while we are there. There are approximately
1,200 first nation people living in the village, and we are told that many
of them still rely on hunting, trapping, and fishing for a large portion
of their food.
What should we do in Berens River? A) Try to talk with elders about how life at the village has changed in order to get a better idea of what it would have been like here when the voyageurs were traveling through in the 1800s. B) Meet with elementary school students and ask them what it is like to live in Berens River. C) Try to join a trapper going out to check their traps, and ask them about hunting, trapping, and fishing. How long should we spend in Berens River? A) As little time as possible. Pick up supplies and leave the same day. B) Spend one day and one night in Berens River exploring the village and getting to know its people. C) Spend 2 days and 2 nights there. We want you to focus on the village, even if it means traveling longer days next week and possibly having fewer chances to study wildlife for a few days after you leave the village. The village is important and a lot of time should be spent there investigating its history and the native culture.
