The Barred Owl is one of those critters that is often heard in the Boreal Forest , but rarely seen. With a 4-foot wing span, these predators of the night are the 3rd largest owl found in North America. Can you name the two largest? Last night I awoke with a start to the low booming "hoo,hoo.....hoo,hoo" of a Barred Owl coming from behind our tent. The Barred Owl roosts in thick patches of evergreen trees at night
and is only active at night, making it very hard to see. When night
settles over the forest, the Owls begin to prowl, looking and listening
for voles, mice, and other prey. Their eyesight is unbelievable. These
amazing birds can see in 1/100th of the amount of light that it takes
humans to see!
