Goal: The goal of the learning adventure is to teach students about the wonders of the border country. Teachers and students can use this site to increase their knowledge and understanding of the border country. I hope you enjoy your learning adventure.

Learning Tools: The learning adventure has five major parts which are listed below. Any comments, suggestions, or support are welcome. To send us an e-mail click here.

Notes from the Trail: These will consist of journal entries and photos which will be updated several times per week via satellite phone while I am on the trail from February 1st to the second week in March. The journal entries will highlight plants, animals, and other aspects of the natural world that I encounter. I will also include information about my well-being, the weather, and what it is like to live outside in a harsh environment for a prolonged period of time.

Fun facts (about the plants, animals, and people that call the border country home): Each topic will contain several pages of facts, pictures, and information. These can be used on their own or with Notes from the trail. The journal entries posted from the trail will contain links to the topics that I discuss. For example, if I talk about a moose that I saw walking along a portage, by clicking on the word "moose" you will be connected to the moose page.

Experiments and trail observations: During the adventure, I will be conducting a number of experiments focusing on beavers. I will observe and record the number and type of animal tracks that are found within a fifty foot radius of each active beaver lodge that I come across. I will also record the sizes of the active beaver lodges and the number of active and non active lodges. By asking a series of questions, such as, "How big are their lodges?" or "What kind of animals are found around beaver ponds and lodges?" the students will learn about beavers and the plants and animals that they interact. The students will also learn how to develop scientific questions and then conduct a field study for answers and data collection purposes.

Classroom visits: After the adventure, I will travel to the classrooms that have participated in the learning adventure. I will present slide shows and lead discussions about the border country.
