Dave Freeman has spent the last 8 years exploring the world's rainforests. Numerous expeditions to the Amazon help him to bring the rainforest to life in a meaningful way that will leave your students anxious to learn more. During the 2008/2009 school year Dave conducted over 50 school visits, bringing the wonders of exploration and the Amazon to over 10,000 students. Dave and his team members use interactive activities as well as photos, videos, sounds, stories, and artifacts collected during expeditions to help students understand how plants, animals, and people live in rainforest.

Plus, students will learn how their lives are connected to the world's rainforest by the foods students eat, products they use, and even the air they breath.

A student demonstrates how to use a traditional hunting tool called a blowgun during an presentation about the Amazon Rainforest.

After a school visit you will be able to:

  • Recognize the rainforest's allure and biodiversity.
  • Identify foods and materials you use that come from the rainforest.
  • Describe a rainforest, including its climate, plants, animals, and people.
  • Discuss the relationship between rainforests, global warming, and other world issues.
  • Help save the rainforests through personal action.
  • Engage in live online expedtions, including the Trans-Amazon Expedition.

Student presentations

Depending on your needs and interests our program can last from 30 minutes to a full day. Generally, 50 to 60 minutes with each group of students is ideal, and we can engage classes individually or give a presentation to your whole school.

Presentations include:
  • photos, videos, and other audio visual media
  • worksheets, and educational activities
  • hands on activities like comparing rain fall in your area to rain fall in the Amazon rainforest, using a traditional blow gun, trying to move as slow as a sloth, and estimating the size of the largest snake in the world will help student learn about and appreciate the worlds rainforest.
  • time for students and teachers to ask questions and get to know the Dave Freeman and other members of the expedition team
  • basic instruction on how to engage in our learning adventures

Cost for school assemblies in the Chicago Area

Students laugh during a chicago area amazon rainforest school assembly
Students often laugh, scream, and cover their eyes when Dave shows them photos and videos of him eating a Palm Weevil (a two inch long grub) that is considered a delicacy in many parts of the Amazon Basin.

Half day visits in the Chicago area cost $500.

Help us arrange a 1/2 day visit at another school in your district on the same day and only pay $400 per school!

Many schools in the Chicago area sign up for two visits, one in Fall before the Trans-Amazon Expedition, and one in December after we return from the Amazon. Two visits cost $800 and include two half day visits, printed teachers guides for all participating teachers, and a 30 to 60 minute teacher training workshop, which is usually conducted before or after school on the day of the first assembly.

Cost for school assemblies outside the Chicago Area
We visit schools across the country and usually charge $500, plus travel expenses. We try to schedule several visits in an area to keep the travel costs down. Generally the total cost per school ranges from $500 to $750. Right now we have visits scheduled in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, and New Jersey. Please contact us for more details about visiting your area.

Teacher Training

Student presentations are often combined with teacher training workshops. We tailor our workshops to the needs of each group. After 30 to 60 minutes teachers will be comfortable navigating our website and will understand how they can engage students in our online programming. We can provide teachers with CPDUs for workshops that are an hour or more in length.

During this interactive assembly Dave Freeman captivates students' attention using images and stories from his many expeditions by dogsled, but the real stars of the show are the dogs. Meeting a real sled dog is always a highlight and Dave uses his 4 legged companions to talk about team work, decision making, the importance of excerise and eating healthy, setting and achieving goals, determination, and other life skills that are important parts of human and sled dog development. Our program is designed to compliment your school's core values.

Dave also brings a sled, harnesses, winter travel and camping gear, and other equipment. Plus, he uses student assistants to demonstrate how he and his dogs travel and live in the frozen wilderness.

Most programs last from 45 to 60 minutes and Dave can usually work with your whole school during one to three assemblies depending on the age of your students, the size of your school, as well as your schedule and needs. Before, between, and after assemblies individual classroom activities can be arranged, allowing students to interact with our team in small groups, ask questions, and receive an even more hands-on experience.

Prices:

$400 for the one assembly

$600 for a half day which could include one or two assemblies as well as activities with smaller groups of students

$750 full day which could include one to three assemblies as well as activities with smaller groups of students

Contact Dave at 312-505-9973 or dave@wildernessclassroom.com to learn more about this exciting learning experience.

About Dave

Dave's was introduced to dogsledding in 1999 when he started leading dogsledding trips with arcitc explorer Paul Schurke. His love for dogsledding, exploration, and his desire to share the wonders of the world's wildest places with students led him to found the Wilderness Classroom, a non-profit organization, in 2001. The Wilderness Classroom has allowed over 100,000 students and teachers to learn about wilderness and improve basic academic skills through school assemblies and online expeditions. Since 2001 Dave have traveled thousands of miles by dogsled, canoe, and kayak through some of the most remote places on the planet. When he is not leading expeditions or visiting schools he and his dog team live in Northern Minnesota on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness where they introduce people to the joys of dogsledding through Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, where Dave has worked since 1999.

 davetundra3.jpg
Dave and one of his favorite sled dogs, Tundra.

Each year Dave conducts over 50 school visits and interacts with thousands of students and teachers. He has found that sled dogs are a wonderful tool for motivating and educating students, and that their desire to learn about these amazing animals can easily be channeled into math, language arts, and other core curriculum areas.

However, the learning doesn't stop with a school assembly, each year students are able to join Dave on one or two 6 to 8 week online expeditions. During online expeditions Dave and his team use laptop computers, satellite phones, and digital cameras to communicate with students from far places. Whether students are following Dave on a dogsled journey across Canada or a canoe expedition deep in the Amazon Rainforest, the personal connections made during school assemblies greatly enhance students' experience during these unforgettable online educational programs.

For more information or to set up a program give Dave a call at 312-505-9973 or email dave@wildernessclassroom.com .

Through support for the Shedd Aquarium, private foundations and corporate donations, Wilderness Classroom is proud to offer 15 scholarships to Chicago Public Schools who are excited and motivated to bring The Trans-Amazon Expedition to their classrooms through the Student Explorers Program.

From March 30th to May 16th, 2008 the Wilderness Classroom will take participating schools on a virtual field trip by canoe down the Amazon River exploring the plants, animals, and people of Peru, Columbia, and Brazil. Our expedition team will use satellite technology to post updates from the trail and communicate with participating students and teachers on a daily basis. Photos, videos, journals, scientific data, and direct communication with expedition members will bring the plants, animals, and people of the flooded forest into classrooms in a whole new way, exposing students, many of whom have never left Chicago, to a whole new world.

Each CPS school in the Student Explorers Program, will receive access to the Wilderness Classroom Organization's multidisciplinary curriculum and lesson plans, two school assemblies (one before the adventure in March 2008 and one in late May/early June 2008 after the adventure), as well as training for participating teachers. At the end of the school year, participating teachers will be asked to provide a brief report of their teaching and student experience, submit examples of student work, and complete a brief evaluation.

Lesson Plans dfreeman 2005-02-18T15:56:07-06:00
Getting Started http://www.wildernessclassroom.com/teacher_resources/2005/02/getting-started.html WHERE TO BEGIN?

The Wilderness Classroom is a free, internet based, adventure learning program for 3rd to 8th grade students and teachers designed to improve students reading, writing, and critical thinking skills by engaging classrooms in live expeditions aimed at tackling real life questions.

During adventures students are able to interact with expedition members, scientists, and other classrooms from around the world as THEY run the expedition. By putting students in the drivers seat we are able to spark their desire to learn and bring the sights, sounds, and experiences of the worlds wildest places into the classroom in a whole new way.

Each learning adventure is focused around expedition updates. Through out each 6 to 8 week live adventure new photos, videos, scientific data, journal entires, podcasts, interactive polls, and other content appear every day Monday through Friday.

This Spring we will return to South America to study the Amazon Rainforest during the second stage of the Trans-America Expedition (March 31st to May 9th 2008)

We hope you will join us on what is sure to be an exciting quest for knowledge about life in the Amazon Rainforest.

Registration

Please take approximately 2 minutes to register your classroom. Registration is free, and grants you full access to all sections of our website including lesson plans, live chats with the explorers, and weekly teacher updates through out the learning adventure.

After you register and choose a username and password please download our teacher introduction, which is full of ways you can use our learning adventures with your students.

The Wilderness Classroom helps students explore the world around them, as they both ask and solve questions they encounter during online learning adventures. Students will strengthen their reading, writing, and vocabulary skills as they gain a deeper sense of cultural and environmental awareness among studens, and draw connections between their daily lives and the lives of people across the globe.

By joining our team, you can empower your students to direct a team of experts as they explore different parts of the world, which are as rich in cultural treasures as it is in plant and animal life. As students help uncover the mysteries and solve problems they will also begin to recognize how the choices they make everyday effect the world around them.

Expedition Updates

Each expedition update contains a variety of content designed to engage, educate, and motivate your students. The links below will take you to examples of the content we offer during each learning adventure. These examples are from the First stage of the Trans-Amazon Expedition in the Spring of 2007.

Notes From The Trail - Weekly journal entries and photos keep students informed and active in the adventure, improve reading comprehension, and expand their vocabulary.

Daily Dilemma - Each day the team posts a new dilemma for students to solve, the following day the team reports how they will solve the dilemma based on the suggestions they received from participating classrooms in the daily podcast. This activity is designed to help students use their higher-order thinking skills and improve their ability to communicate clearly through class discussion and written responses. Daily Dilemmas.

Daily Podcast - Every morning you can listen to our audio updates and learn how we plan to solve the daily dilemma from the previous day. You will need Flash to listen to audio updates. The podcast also includes miles traveled and weather data for students to record, graph, and analyze.

Cultural Connections - Interesting facts and profiles about the people we've met along the way will be posted every Monday and will introduce students to different cultures and improve reading comprehension.

Amazon Animals - Each day a new animal of the rainforest will be featured. Find out where it lives, what it eats, and other interesting facts. Photos included. Interest in these animals often leads to student directed research about the animals using links and resources posted at the bottom of each entry.

Video Clips - One to two minute videos uploaded from the rainforest was we travel give students unique glimpses into life in the rainforest. You will need Flash 8.0 or higher to view our videos.

Mystery Photo - Each update, students can use their investigative skills to solve a mystery. Clues are provided and responses are sent to the adventurers. Mystery Photos are a huge hit with 1st to 4th grade students. Facilitate class discussions by using an a LCD projector to view and solve the mystery as a class!

Cast Your Vote - Decide where the adventurers go and what they study by casting your vote using online polls. Encourage students to submit their reasons why they voted for a particular destination. When students understand their making decisions for the team their level interest and learning sky rocket.

Expedition Maps - Follow the journey through interactive maps that highlight geography.

CURRICULUM

Lesson Plans: Lesson Plans make it easy for you to integrate our program into your existing curriculum. To accomplish this we have developed a wide range of quick activities (most with worksheets) to use in conjunction with Notes From The Trail, Animals of the Amazon, Daily Dilemmas,Mystery Photos, and Cultural Connections. All activities are aligned to Illinois State Standards, and are designed to help students improve their performance during standardized testing. Download the 132 page Trans-Amazon Teacher's Guide for free, or order a printed copy for $15.
Rainforest Library: The Rain Forest Library contains a wealth of information for you and your students. Included are useful facts and pictures about the different animals, plants, and people who make the rainforest home. It is intended as a quick reference guide and a supplement to the information provided at the beginning of each unit.
