anxious to learn more. During the 2008/2009 school year Dave conducted
over 50 school visits, bringing the wonders of exploration and the Amazon
to over 10,000 students. Dave and his team members use interactive activities as well as photos, videos, sounds, stories, and artifacts collected during expeditions to help students understand how plants,
animals, and people live in rainforest.

Plus, students will learn how their lives are

Dave's was introduced to dogsledding
in 1999 when he started leading dogsledding trips with arcitc explorer Paul
Schurke. His love for dogsledding, exploration, and his desire to share
the wonders of the world's wildest places with students led him to found
the Wilderness Classroom, a non-profit organization, in 2001. The Wilderness
Classroom has allowed over 100,000 students and teachers to learn about
wilderness and improve basic academic skills through school assemblies and
online expeditions. Since 2001 Dave have traveled thousands of miles by
dogsled, canoe, and kayak through some of the most remote places on the
planet. When he is not leading expeditions or visiting schools he and his
dog team live in Northern Minnesota on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness where they introduce people to the joys of dogsledding through
      Wintergreen Dogsled

Each year Dave conducts over 50 school visits and interacts with thousands
of students and teachers. He has found that sled dogs are a wonderful tool for
motivating and educating students, and that their desire to learn about these
amazing animals can easily be channeled into math, language arts, and other
  core curriculum areas.

However, the learning doesn't stop with a school assembly, each year students
are able to join Dave on one or two 6 to 8 week online expeditions. During online
expeditions Dave and his team use laptop computers, satellite phones, and digital
cameras to communicate with students from far places. Whether students are following
Dave on a dogsled journey across Canada or a canoe expedition deep in the Amazon
Rainforest, the personal connections made during school assemblies greatly enhance
students' experience during these unforgettable online educational programs.

who are excited and motivated to bring The Trans-Amazon Expedition to their classrooms
through the Student Explorers Program.

From March 30th to May 16th, 2008 the Wilderness Classroom will take
participating schools on a virtual field trip by canoe down the Amazon

WHERE TO BEGIN?

The Wilderness Classroom is a free, internet based, adventure learning program for 3rd to 8th grade students and teachers designed to improve students reading, writing, and critical thinking skills by engaging classrooms in live expeditions aimed at tackling real life questions.

During adventures students are able to interact with expedition members, scientists, and other classrooms from around the world as THEY run the expedition. By putting students in the drivers seat we are able to spark their desire to learn and bring the sights, sounds, and experiences of the worlds wildest places into the classroom in a whole new way.

Each learning adventure is focused around expedition
updates. Through out each 6 to 8 week live adventure new photos, videos, scientific data,
journal entires, podcasts, interactive polls, and other content appear
  every day Monday through Friday.

This Spring we will return to South America to study the Amazon Rainforest during the second stage of the Trans-America Expedition (March 31st to
  May 9th 2008)

We hope you will join us on what is sure to be an exciting quest for knowledge about life in the Amazon Rainforest.

Registration

Please take approximately 2 minutes to register

and motivate your students. The links below will take you to examples of the content
we offer during each learning adventure. These examples are from the First stage of the Trans-Amazon Expedition in the Spring of 2007.

Notes
From The Trail - Weekly journal entries and photos keep students
informed and active in the adventure, improve reading comprehension, and expand their vocabulary.

Daily
Dilemma - Each day the team posts a new dilemma for students to solve, the following day the team reports how they will solve the dilemma based on the suggestions they received from participating classrooms in the daily podcast. This activity is designed to help students use their higher-order thinking skills and improve their ability to communicate clearly through class discussion and written responses.
  Daily Dilemmas.

Daily Podcast

to solve the daily dilemma from the previous day. You will need Flash to listen
to audio updates. The podcast also includes miles traveled and weather data for students to record, graph, and analyze.

Cultural
Connections - Interesting facts and profiles about the people we've

  Amazon
Animals - Each day a new animal of the rainforest will be featured.
