Update 8: What Time is Dinner?
When things are getting tough in the rainforest, we always know that we can
count on a nice, stove-cooked meal when we get to camp each night.....or can
we?
As we canoe through the flooded forest, we might not see dry land for several
days at a time. This situation might make cooking our dinners quite interesting
and a bit difficult. Where and how do we cook? Another issue that might add
to the complications of cooking at night are our flying friends, the mosquitoes.
When the sun goes down, the mosquitoes come out in full force. Swarms of mosquitoes
buzzing around our heads can be rather uncomfortable when we are trying to cook.
I think I'd rather be in the safety of my mosquito netted hammock!
Most of the food we have brought along on our journey is dry; it has to be
cooked in order to eat. This is because we do not have a way to preserve fresh
food in the heat of the rainforest.
So no matter what, we have to cook our food. The question is how do we eat
when there is no dry land and swarms of mosquitoes eating us for dinner?
We would love to hear any suggestions you might have as to how to get through
this dilemma.
Cheers to fine dining,
Anna
try cooking in something like a coffee can on your canoe right before the mosquitoes come out and after you finish cooking the smoke should keep some of the mosquitoes away.

You should probably put on bug spray on you and you should try to climb trees to get fruit if possible

I think that you should eat in the canoe and cook on a electric stove and put on bug spray and make traps.Or you can eat in the tent and close it so the bugs can't bite you and your in a saffer place to eat.

We think that you should try cooking your food before the mosquitos come out, perhaps earlier in the afternoon, putting it in a container, and then eating it later.
Is it possible to to cook inside your mosquito netting?
Try cooking earlier, but keep the bug spray near by!

You should cook before you go into the open forest to have it ready to eat when you are ready to eat it.

While you cook, you could put the misquito nets over your heads.

I think you could get a big pot and start a fire in the boat in that pot. That would make things easier for you and you wouldn't need land to do that, just a little bit of food for the fire!!

try eating in a mosqitoe net so they can't get in

I think you should have brange along foods that don't need to be cooked like chips of bannanas and stuff like that. I think you should Find some place like in a clearing or somthing and cook your foods there.

you should take advantage of it and have a nice dinner

I think that you should cook the food early in the day so at night you can eat it. Then you can eat it, or try to eat it in your hamock.

I think you should Catch Fish

you should cook in a mosquito net. You should also wear bugreppalent. From the students in 5th grade

We think that you should try to put some mosquito netting around you when you cook- to do this, you could use your paddles as poles and surroud them with the netting.
Make sure you also use the bug spray when you're cooking.

We think you should either cook the food at the bottom of the canoe or take the hammock and put it over the canoe and eat inside the canoe.

We think that you should cook earlier before the mosquitos come out, maybe you can build a small fire to get the smoke to prevent the mosquitos from coming near you, or, try putting mosquito netting around you when you eat.
Also, before you leave town, is there anything that you can buy to bring with you that you don't have to cook?

Build a smaller raft to cook on. Make it able to fold up, for example, tie logs together with vines. Cover yourselves up with the hammock netting while you cook.

We think that you should prepare the food early in the morning. Then it can be reheated when you are at your stopping place. If you can find a place near your hammock away from the mosquitos you can then eat. Maybe you could place a netting over your boat and eat in the boats.

We think that you should put on bug spray when cooking, make a canopy of mosquito netting around you when you cook, or try cooking your meals before the sun goes down.

Sounds like a very uncomfortable situation! We think that you sould stabilize the canoe and cook at the bottom of the canoe. We like the suggestion of putting some mosquito netting up around you with your paddles. Also, cooking before it gets dark and keeping the food warm until you can eat it (inside your netting) is another good suggestion. Avoid the bug spray when you are cooking and eating, we say. Can you put mosquito netting just over your head so you aren't swatting the mosquitos away from your face the whole time you are cooking?

Maybe you could cover up the dinner that you are not eating with a paper towel and eat the dinner in portions, like first veggies, then meat, then bread. That way you can eat your food and the mosquitos won't be all over ALL of your food.
Posted by: Ms. Cegielski at April 18, 2006 11:14 AM
You can eat in a mosquito netted hammock with a top on the hammock so the mosquitos will not bite you.

Sorry this reply is late, but we just returned from our spring break. Use a metal grate (like a barbeque) and stretch it out between the 2 canoes. Protect the wood of the canoe from the hot grate with pot holders. Build your fire on the grate between the canoes. Cook early before the mosquitos come out. Another idea is to suspend a fire pit with chains from a tree for cooking.

I heard that there was this type of wood that keeps mosquitos away if you burn it (the smoke keeps it away).
Either you use that or GET A BUG REPELLENT CANDLE!!!!!!!
