Update 6: To Give Or Not To Give
In our first week in Peru, we have had all kinds of interesting encounters
with people of the region. Just like in the United States, some people are poor
and hungry and are on the streets begging for money. Nearly everywhere we have
gone, people have approached us, asking for money. Some of them even follow
us around the markets and streets and continue to beg.
What should we do when these people approach us and ask for money? Unfortunately,
we don't have enough money to give to everyone that asks! And, just like in
the United States, how do we know that the money is going towards food for their
bellies instead of towards things that aren't good for them?
Keep Exploring!

I think you should buy food while you are walking in the market and when people ask you for money, give them food.

My class mainly believes that you should not give anyone money, but maybe you could share your food instead.

you should try to avoid them

I think that you are right!! Sometimes you just have to say no because theses people that are asking for money are poor and on the streets for a reason!! And you probley dont have a lot to spend with getting groceries and keeping healthy. So i think next time someone comes up to you asking for money i would just say in a polite way no i am sorry i dont have enough money for you and I to share.

i think you should just tell them sorry and you do not have any money. And also i think you sould buy them a little food and say that, that is all the money you have for them and ask them if
the food you just bought them is healthy so then you will not be buying junk food you will be buying them food that can be worth a little bit in the long run.
thank you for listening

I think you should tell them to leave you alone; you don't have enough money for all of them. Tell them they should try to get a job.

I think you should not give beggars money because, like you said, you don't know where the money is going.
Posted by: Mr. Elder at April 7, 2006 10:05 AM
I think that you should give around $0.10 to$0 .20 to almost everyone because 20 cents won't do you much good, butv it might do them a little good.

Maybe you shouold give them a SMALL piece of food.
Posted by: Mr.Elder at April 7, 2006 10:08 AM
you should buy the food like everyone else does there. then they could just do what they did before you were there. if they can do it before they won't be harmed again.

I dont think that you should give them money.
Posted by: scott at April 7, 2006 10:09 AM
I think that you should give money to the really poor and not to the richer people in the country
Posted by: mr elder at April 7, 2006 10:11 AM
15 students want you to buy food to pass out to the people that are begging.
1 student thinks you should not give the people any money .
4 students think you should give them money.

Yes, you should donate money, but ask the reason they need it! Try and make sure it is a good reason. Try to make sure that it is not too much money.

Our class thinks you should give a small amount of money to just a few people. Be sure you have enough money for yourself and for supplies.

This is a tough delimma. Most of my class thinks you should politely tell them you don't have enough money to give since you have planned out how much money you needed for the trip. Some feel you could give them just a little or offer to buy them a meal.
Posted by: Mrs. Smith at April 7, 2006 12:49 PM
Well, we think you shouldn't give money to the beggers because they may be faking to get more money. Also like you said, who knows if they are really using it for things they need instead of bad stuff.
Posted by: Miss Carroll at April 7, 2006 01:13 PM
We think you should give them food not money, because if you give them money it might go towards bad things. This way you can make sure that that they have something to eat.
Posted by: Miss Carroll at April 7, 2006 02:01 PM
We think that you should ask them where the money will go. If they reply look them in the eyes to see if there telling the truth or not. Make sure that the money will not go to drugs.
Posted by: Miss Carroll at April 7, 2006 03:01 PM
you should just try to avoud them keep walking
Posted by: cheyenne at April 7, 2006 05:36 PM
We think that it would be best to offer to buy a few of them a meal instead of giving them money. That way, you know how it is spent!
We miss you guys and hope you are doing well. We spent some time on the website in computer lab on Thursday, but Miss Sherwin is going to start sharing the updates and activities with the students next week! Love you!

I think you either give little money, or buy a few meals.
Posted by: Ms. Dalleska at April 10, 2006 08:40 AM
I think you should not give your money or any food to the beggers because if people give them money, there becomes no reason to try and find a new way to get money. Also, they may not spend it on something useful, and end up wasting your money.

I think that you should give money to poor children and old people. If you gave money to old people they'd use it for medicine and the kids would use it for candy or bring it back home to the family.
