Update 5: Monkey on a Chain
Update 5: A Monkey on a Chain

The Belen market in Iquitos is one of the most fantastic shopping experiences
in the world. People bring goods from the all over the vast Amazon basin
to Iquitos, which is known as the capital of Peru's rainforest. As you
may be able to imagine, the market's shops sell just about anything we
have ever dreamt of
and some things we never knew existed! From
fish and vegetables to herbal medicines and tribal artifacts, the market
abounds with the fruits of the region. We have also found several animals
that have been taken from their homes in the rainforest. Macaws
are stuck in cages, snakes in burlap sacks, monkeys
leashed, and a sloth
hanging out on men's shoulders. These animals are being displayed and
sold as pets.

Anna holds a baby Woolly Monkey which a woman tried to sell us
for 50 soles.

We are not sure what to think of the animal trade. It seems like the animals
in human captivity are not living as they are supposed to.
We will be spending lots of time and money at the Belen market to get all of
our food, so we were wondering if you could help us to better understand the
situation. Do you think that animals should be taken from the rainforest and
sold as pets? Explain your answer, and if you think selling pets in the market
is a bad idea let us know how we can help.
Keep Exploring!

We believe that animals should not be taken from their natural habitat. Taking a wild animal out of its habitat is cruel. It could become sick from not eating the right foods and it would not be taught by the parent how to search for food or survive predators. People who buy wild animals for pets could get tired of taking care of them and release them back into the wild. These animals would surely die because they lack the skills to survive. Laws should be put in place to protect all wild animals.

selling wild animals as pets is inhumane because they are meant to live in the rainforest and I think that monkeys are wild and not ready for the captivity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: elder at April 5, 2006 10:36 AM
We think the animals should be put into the rainforest and then left alone.
Posted by: Mr.Elder at April 5, 2006 10:37 AM
i think that no one should touch wild animals
Posted by: elder at April 5, 2006 10:38 AM

Posted by: mr. elder at April 5, 2006 10:38 AM

I think that there should be no taking animals from the forest and to stop it you could send a note to the capital and ask if it could be made illegal.

Most of my students feel it isn't right for people to capture and sell the rainforest animals. Aubrey suggests that you buy some and return them to the rainforest. Karsten thinks that if you ever see anyone capturing them during your trip, you should convince them not to do it.

We think animals shouldn't be sold as "pets" they should be in the rainforest with others of their species. You should go and tell them to set them free

I think that we sould buy they monkey

No, I do not think the animals should be taken from the rainforest and sold cause that is just like you being taken from your home and put up for adoption! It is wrong and that is not fair and the animals have families too and friends who miss them just like you do!So just because they are animals doesnt mean you can just take them away from their homes!I feel animals have the right to live where ever they want and should be apprecate them while they are here!Animals are beautiful creatures and should be treated like it!Animals play a beautiful role in many people lives.Animals should be free and where they belong with family and friends!Just like us!
Sincerly,

Hello from 3rd grade at Everett Elementary!!! We hope your trip is going well. We were very confused about this question. Some of us thought that selling animals as pets was cool, but others thought that it would not be fair to take them away from their families. First, to solve the problem, ask these people at the markets why they are doing this. Then ask them if they would think about selling fruits and vegtables. Or...try fishing and sell fish instead!

I think that it would be better to shop in a market in the U.S Because it is more safe

NO I do not think that animals should be taken out of the rain forest because how do you know if they have a disease. That is just wrong. It's just like them taking me out of my home.I think they are trying to destroy the rain forest, and build a amusement park out of it.I bet they wouldn't like it if we took them out of their home.By doing that they are destroying mother nature. That would throw off the balance of the earth.Nobody wants that.I think that we should make peace with the animals instead of destroying their home.I have a pet of my own,his name is taco I love him very much.

Our class thinks that the animals should be left in their natural habitat. They are worried about the animals' families that were left behind. The only reason we think it would be better for the animals to be pets is if they were hurt or abandoned by their parents.

NO,We do not think that the animals should be sell as pets because they will not be use to their enivorment, harm people, and they will miss they family they had and what they left behind. They only reason We said no because the animals would miss there families.
Posted by: Ms.Z at April 5, 2006 02:05 PM
NO,WE THINK THE PETS SHOULD NOT BE SELLED AS A PET BECOUSE THEY ARE NOT HARMFUL AND THEY WOULDNT WANT PEOPLE TO SELL THEM AS SOMETHING THEIR NOT.PLUS THEY HAVENT DID ANY THING RONG AND THEY WOULD MISS THEIR FAMALIES.JUST AS WE WOULD.

We believe that the animals should be left in their natural habitat. It is unfair to the animals to take them from their homes and families.
Posted by: Mrs. Whitney at April 6, 2006 02:31 PM
Some reasons we feel that animals should not be sold are: 1) It is not good to remove animals from their natural habitat. 2) If too many animals are sold as popularity increases certain species might become extinct. 3) If animals are removed from their natural predators, overpopulation could take place in the new environment.
We do not believe you should buy any animals, because doing so will encourage people to capture more to sell.
To improve the situation you could 1) talk to the local officials and explain the situation to see if they might enact laws to cut down on the number of animals going to the markets. 2) talk to those who are selling the animals and explain your concerns.
Here at home, we could talk to owners of pet stores that sell these animals and explain why we think they should be left in their natural environment. Since we don't have too many local pet stores, we could call or write to stores. We could write a letter to the newspaper or try to get an opinion on TV. Maybe all the students involved in Wilderness Classroom could start a campaign.
The only place outside the rain forest where we feel rain forest animals should be allowed is in zoos, aviaries, etc. where they serve an educational purpose and are well taken care of.

I think selling animals as pets in Iqiutos is a terrible, cruel, and dumb idea. Not only are they being taken from their homes, they are being sold to homes where they are often not taken care of properly. Wild animals are meant to be wild. That is why are they are called wild animals! Not only have people invaded animals' home, now they are just taking them them away for good. When animals are sold, merchants only care about making money off of them and could certainly care less if they go to nice homes with people who will take care of their needs. When animals are taken from the rainforest, they are treated cruelly by handlers. They are jammed into cages, stuffed into bags, and put on leashes. Also, animals have lives too. They might be leaving their families or their homes. I suggest that you don't buy animals and discourage others to as well.

I don't think the animals should be sold at the Belen market. Those animals live in the rainforest and are wild animals. They don't want to live in someones home. They would just become unhappy. They are better off living in the rain forest. Please do something about it. The snakes, sloths, and Macaws should be treated better.
Posted by: Mrs. Dalleska at April 6, 2006 03:03 PM
We think animals should not be sold because taking an animal from its home is cruel and they need to live a normal life like us. They need to be with their family in the Rainforest. The snakes, sloths, and macaws are wid animals in the Rainforest.

I think that you should talk to the police station about a ban on taking animals from their habitats I know that some people might not listen but on the other hand it might stop some people from taking the animals from their families and home I will keep you posted on what I think. I think your trip is cool.

I think you should buy the animal and take the animal to a place where they take care of baby animals.

I do not belive that someone would hunt an animal and sell it at the market like the Wolly monkey. It is wrong to keep an animal away from it's natural habatat
Posted by: Cegielski at April 11, 2006 12:56 PM
I think you should discourage people around you to buy one. "Wow, I can't believe how those animals are being treated" or "I would never buy an animal because I know that we wold not be able to take care of a rainforest animal, even though it is cute."
And of course, you yourself should not buy one.
