Update 13: How much gasoline can we use each day?
For cooking our meals here in the flooded forest, we use stoves that require
gasoline. We brought about 10 gallons of gasoline along with us on our trip.
We have twelve days left of needing to cook with that gasoline, and we have
already used about 5 gallons in 10 days. This means that we need to conserve
gasoline in order to make it last for the last two weeks of our trip. How much
gasoline can we use each day in order to have enough to last us until the end
of the trip? Remember, there are 128 ounces in a gallon.
In what other ways can we be more efficient with our gasoline use? Do you have
any ideas that might help us save gasoline when we are cooking?
Gasoline must be conserved not just in the flooded forest, but everywhere.
This is because gasoline won't last very long at the rate we are using it. How
might your family be more efficient with their use of gasoline in the United
States? Are there other natural resources that we can depend on that won't run
out?

Aubrey suggests that when you are cooking a meal, make extra food to save for a later meal, and then you won't have to use gasoline at each meal time. Kaysyee thinks that you could eat food from the rain forest at a meal so you won't need a fire.

My class thinks you need to reduce your use of gasoline perhaps by eating things that don't have to be cooked. If you use 1/4 gallon per day for cooking, you won't run out. Do you like raw fish?

We think that you shoud eat foods that don't require cooking. Eat foods that must be cooked very sparingly.

4th Grade HAWK Students figure you can use about 45.5 ounces of gasoline each day for the remainder of your trip. One suggestion for conserving gasoline is to eat more fruits and vegetables that don't have to be cooked. Are any of the fish the type that could be eaten raw as sushi? You might be able to cook every other day and eat cold leftovers on the alternate days, that is if you have a way to preserve it and not get food poisoning. If you are near a home or ranger station, maybe the people there will let you share their fire and save your fuel. If you can find dry sticks in the flooded forest you could build a fire without gasoline.

Use half a gallon for 8 days and then use 1 quater of a gallon for the last 4 days or use 1 quater when it seems like you will need less of a fire. You can use the rainforest for food like fruits but next time bring a lighter or more gasoline.

We calculated that you could use 45 ounces per day and have 10 ounces remaining at the end of 14 days. The class says to eat 2 large meals per day instead of three. Use the gasoline to start a wood fire and cook only on the wood fire.
In the US, we can conserve gasoline by using solar power, riding bikes & walking more, do not use cars as often as possible, car pool, use public transportation, and support alternative fuel research and the companies trying this.
