Update 10: Where Are We Going to Sleep Tonight?

As we paddle through the flooded forest, dry land is not always easy to find. We have to use eagle eyes to scan the banks for any sign of earth. Even if we paddle away from the river and into the trees, it could be a long time before we find land. If the sun is beginning to set and we can't find dry land, we come across quite a dilemma.

Do we keep canoeing until we find dry land or a ranger station? That option could take hours.

Do we sleep in our canoes? We probably wouldn't get a good nights rest, since our canoes are stacked high with gear.

Do we try to hang our hammocks in the trees above the water? It might make for an interesting and quite tricky camping scenario.

Do you have any other suggestions for us? Do any of these ideas seem good to you?

Although all of these options might prove to be a bit uncomfortable, the rainforest, like most things in life, doesn't always provide us with what we want when we want it.

Being thankful for a roof over our heads,

Anna

We think that you should take turns rowing until you find dry land. While a couple people are rowing the others should sleep.

You should take turns paddling and sleeping until you find dry land.

We think you might want to hang the hammocks in trees above the water. Even though this might be difficult you would be able to get a good nights sleep once the hammock is safely hung in the trees.

We think you should set up your hammocks in the trees and sleep in the forest for the night. Be careful of those red ants though!!!

Our class said that one person could paddle while the other person takes turns sleeping. Sort of like what we do on a long car trip. That way, you might reach the ranger's station faster.

All the best,

We suggest that you put your hammocks in a tree, then you could put all the items from your canoe in the hammocks and sleep in the canoe. You could also simply sleep in the hammocks and leave your gear in the canoe.

I think that you should sleep in the hamocks in the trees, because that not only would be away from the water, and would be easy to sleep, it would be FUN! It may be a little difficult to put up the hamocks, but hey, it's worth the hard work if it leads to FUN!

P.S. DON'T FORGET TO NOT ROCK ON THE HAMOCK! (you'll tip!)

We think that you should try to hang your hammocks to sleep in because it is faster than searching for dry land, it would be more comfortable than sleeping in the canoe, you will get a better night's rest, and it will probably be easy to find a good tree to hang the hammocks in.

We also think you should try this strategy to help you hang the hammocks. People from each canoe can help to hang up the hammocks. Each canoe can take an end of a hammock and hang it on a tree branch.

I think that you should search for one hour and then just sleep in your canoes because the hammocks might fall. To make the sleep in the canoes better, why don't you use the mosquito nets?

We think that you should hang your hammocks and sleep in them. Some of our reasons for this decision are that you could do it faster than paddling to find dry land, this will also give you more time to sleep, and you might have the opportunity to see different wildlife in the trees.

We think that you should take turns paddling while others are sleeping so that you can reach dry land.

We think you should sleep in a hammock. You'll be able to watch the animals around you. You'll be safe in the hammock because on a canoe you may drift away. A hammock would be better because it might take too long to get to the next ranger station. Sleep Tight...Don't let the Red Ants BITE!

Posted by: Mrs.Kummer at April 18, 2006 02:38 PM

We think you should sleep in your hammocks so you won't get mosquito bites. If you stay in the canoe you might fall in the water. There are piranhas and other wild animals in there. You will also stay dry in the hammock.

We think that it is important for you to get rest. Therefore, we do not feel it is a good idea for you to just keep canoeing in search of dry land or a ranger station. Perhaps you could take turns sleeping in the canoes while others paddle. Or you could hang your hammocks from the trees and have an adventure. Thinking about your dilemma makes us thankful that we get to go home and sleep in comfortable beds.

We think that you should try to hang your hammocks above the water because it would be more comfortable than sleeping in the canoes, it would be a true adventure to sleep above the water, and you would get more sleep than if you kept looking for dry land.

To hang your hammocks, work together and be sure to use the tree for support so that you don't fall!

I think you should take turns paddling while the rest of the team sleeps. You may not get the best sleep.. but you can get pretty far.

Posted by: Jamie Pabbs at April 18, 2006 07:27 PM

I think that you should just try to sleep in your canoes or try to just rest a little bit and then look for some place to sleep either a ranger station or dry land.

Posted by: Miss Cegielski at April 18, 2006 08:23 PM

YOU CAN SLEEP IN THE CANOE.

Posted by: MS. LIZZY at April 20, 2006 10:19 AM

YOU SHOULD SEARCH FOR ONE HOUR AND SLEEP FOR ONE HOUR. COVER UP TIGHT SO NO MOSQUITOS CAN GET IN.

Posted by: MRS.LIZZY at April 20, 2006 10:50 AM

I think that you should try to hang your hammocks from the high trees in Peru, It would indeed make a marvulous adventure for your group!

Posted by: elder at April 24, 2006 09:21 PM

Our class thinks sleeping in the hammocks is the way to go. When else will you have the opporttunity to sleep in a flooded forest?

Posted by: Mrs. Spohnholtz at April 25, 2006 11:16 AM

You shouldn't risk finding land but it probably would be FUN sleeping in a hammock. Just don't FALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
