What type of paddle should we use?
Each week between now and the first week of May you will have to make decisions for us as we try to answer the question, "How do plants, animals, and people survive in the flooded rainforest?"
This week, we are having trouble deciding what type of paddles we should use during Project Peru. There are positive and negative features of both types of paddles.
The paddles from the Amazon are strong, and have a large blade, but they are very heavy, which would make paddling harder. Using paddles from the Amazon would cause us to travel slower. The paddles from the United States are strong, and light. The paddles from the United States would allow us to move faster, and cover more distance with less effort.
The paddles from the Amazon are like the paddles that everyone else we encounter use every day. The paddles from the United States look different, and would be something that the local people have never used before.
Can you think of other things to consider when making your decision? I am sure there are other things to consider.
Weigh the benefits and the drawbacks of each type of paddle. Then vote to let us know which type of paddle you would like us to use.
Keep Exploring!
