We got word this afternoon that someone was building some dugout canoes near a village we would be passing. When we arrived in the area, we heard the steady sound of chopping, so we decided to trek back into the woods to investigate. We discovered an old native man carving out three canoes from two huge kapok trees. Each canoe would take eight days to construct, and the old man was about half done with each of them. He was just finishing the process of hollowing out the last trunk when we arrived, but he still needed to detach the "canoes" from the rest of the trees, temper the hulls using fire, and, finally, stretch the wood to make the canoes wider and shallower.
