Meet Ruben, the newest member of our team!

While we are traveling, we are lucky to have 2 guides that will be with us and helping us. Our first guide, Ruben, met us in Lima. He actually found me at the airport as I was about to miss the flight due to a customs hold up. He brought me to meet the rest of the gang, so he started guiding right away! Here is my interview with Ruben, up close and personal with a real person from Peru! All the questions and answers are first in English and then in Spanish (thanks Ruben!) What is your name? Who do you live with? My Parents
Con quien vives? Con mis padres
Do you have any brothers or sisters? Yes, one brother.
Tienes hermanos o hermanas? Si, un hermano.
What do you do for work? Guide tourists in the rainforest in Southeastern Peru.
En que trabajas? Guio turistas en el bosque lluvioso en el sudeste peruano.
Can you describe school in Peru - what are the different levels called?
We have kindergarten, then primary for 6 years, then secondary for 5 years.
When you finish school you can go to university or technical school if you want
to.
Puedes describir el colegio en Peru? Como se llaman los diferentes niveles?
Tenemos jardin de la infancia, despues 6 ãnos de primaria, luego 5 ãnos
de secundaria. Cuando terminas el colegio puedes escoger la universidad o una
carrera tecnica.
Do you like sports? What do you play?
Yes. I like to ride my bicycle and running.
Te gustan los deportes? Cuales practicas?
Si bicicleta y correr.
What kind of music do you like?
Salsa, Reggae, Rock and Roll and Trova (Latin American protest music).
Que musica te gusta?

What is your favorite food?
Lomo Saltado - a dish with beef and french fries, onions, tomatoes, and garlic cooked
together in a frying pan.
Cual es tu comida favorita?
Lomo saltado:pedazos pequenhos de carne con papas fritas, cebollas, tomate,
un poco de ajos y pimenta blanca, todo salteado en una sarten.
What do you think is unique about being Peruvian?
We live in a country with lots of variety, diversity, biodiversity and also with different ecosystems - you can be on the coast, the jungle.
Que crees que es unico de ser peruano? Pertenecer a un pais con mucha variedad y biodiversidad, muchos ecosistemas, facilmente puedes pasar de un desierto a las montãnas y a la selva.
Tell about the goverment.
We have a democracy with a president and congress. Sometimes there is corruption
and every 5 years there are elections to vote in new people. Voting in this
country is mandatory, if you don't vote you get fined.
Cuentanos sobre el gobierno?
Tenemos democracia con un presidente y congreso, algunas veces hay corrupcion
cada 5 ãnos tenemos elecciones que son obligatorias, sino votas tienes
que pagar una multa.
What comes to mind when you think about America and Americans?
I think it's a nice country where things seem to work better than here. There
seems to be a lot more order. I think Americans consume a lot and throw a lot
away. It seems there are great opportunities.
Que se te viene a la mente cuando escuchas de Estados Unidos y de los estadounidenses?
Me parece un bonito pais, donde las cosas funcionan mejor que aqui, parece haber
mas orden. Tambien creo que son muy consumistas y producen demasiados desperdicios.
Parece haber muchas oportunidades.
