This is a Pacific madrone tree. It is a broadleaf evergreen tree with rich orange-red bark that peels away. They can grow to be 30 meters (98 feet) tall. They produce berries that many birds and mammals eat. The madrone depends on intermittent naturally occurring fires to reduce the conifer overstory. Mature trees survive fire, and can regenerate more rapidly after fire than Douglas fir trees.
