Welcome to Miami

We flew into Miami today and leave for Bimini in the morning.

After months of anticipation and hard work, we have finally come to the most exciting day of our summer. Despite our dark and gloomy morning due to the rain, we all got our baggage together, put our fins in our book bags and headed for the airport where we all met, full of excitement! After some delay, we finally boarded the plane and headed for our destination. To our surprise, when getting off the plane and heading toward the baggage claim, we met our mentors Maggie and Colby who were heading back to Chicago. We exchanged a couple of words and quickly headed toward the baggage claim knowing that Laura and Matt were waiting for us there. After gathering our baggage we headed to the luxurious limo-bus, which took us to the shipyard. There we boarded our home for the next week, The Coral Reef II. We were all thrilled to finally be here!

Our bunks are small, but comfortable.

After we settled in, we were assigned daily boat duties. Matt gave us a tour of the boat and all of its features. We later met up with Captain John, who led us through the rules and regulations of the ship. All in all, our day was very exciting. We are all very proud that we have made it this far and are hopeful for the adventures we are yet to encounter. We cannot wait to set sail tomorrow morning! Getting up with the sun and heading for the wide open ocean will be quite the way to start our next day!

I'm happy to see that the crew arrived safe and sound in Miami. Miami isn't as easy an airport to navigate as Tampa, is it? We're looking forward to hearing about daily life on the R.V. and the research projects. I will be checking in every day to read, see, and hear the latest news.

It looks like you guys are having an awesome time! I wish I was back on the boat too! Your first day sounds really similar to week 1's. I can't wait to see you guys at post-trip!!

We can not wait to hear from you, and to see pictures. Big job is ahead! Try your best. We are very proud of you. It is going to be your boot camp; lot of work. Talk to you soon.
