A Year in the Wilderness

On the Fall Equinox (September 23) Dave and Amy Freeman will launch their canoe in the Kawishiwi River and paddle into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They will then remain in the Nation’s most popular Wilderness Area for a full year, camping at approximately 120 different sites during this Year in the Wilderness and traveling over 3,000 miles by canoe, foot, ski, snowshoe and dog team.

Throughout the year elementary and middle school classrooms will be able to follow the adventure and learn along with the Freemans. Each week Dave and Amy will share a wide range of educational content designed to engage, educate and inspire elementary and middle school students. Mystery photos, video clips, scientific data, blog posts and an interactive map will allow you to join in the adventure.

Plus, you can vote and help decide what the Freemans should study and help them make important decisions. Do you have a question for Dave and Amy? You can email them or schedule a live video conference from the wilderness using Skype!

We are developing a series of lesson plans aligned to Common Core standards over the summer, which you can use to integrate the Year in the Wilderness into your curriculum. We look forward to sharing these with you in September.

There are lots of parents, grandparents, and learners of all ages who love following the Freemans and learning along with them. Our team is busy finalizing the details and developing curriculum for the next adventure. We encourage you to join our mailing list so we can alert you when we unveil our next online expedition.

The Freemans will be working with the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters throughout the Year in the Wilderness to draw attention to copper mines being proposed on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You can learn more about this important issue and how you can help protect the Boundary Waters on their website.

So stay tuned. We look forward to sharing the adventure with you!

This sounds like an amazing opportunity for fantastically engaging lessons for my 3rd graders this fall. Can’t wait to begin. Thank you in advance.
