The Lksar tour finishes here with a picture of a traditional toilet made of clay and sand. The hole that serves as the evacuation pipe is connected to a channel of traditional plumbing tunnels that go deep into the earth and are absorbed by the surrounding dirt and clay and rock. The Lksar is a traditional desert dwelling. Located in the town of Tiout, Algeria, this Lksar has been updated with gas, electricity and in some cases running water. For those without running water you can see the outdoor faucet in the courtyard where people fill up a bucket to take back inside.

The structure is made from clay, palm fronds and palm tree trunks. The Lksar is built like a labyrinth in order to protect the people inside from wind and sand storms. This probably also served as

Meet Taous

Taous Claire Khazem is an actor, director, teaching artist and playwright. Before moving to Algeria she was the Education Coordinator for SteppingStone Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has performed with multiple theatre companies in the Twin Cities. Her one-woman show TIZI OUZOU has toured to Portland, Seattle, Alexandria (Egypt) and Oran (Algeria). In Algeria she created Daraja Theatre and produces solo performance in English, French and Arabic. Taous also teaches English and Acting to youth in Algeria and France.

Taous is excited to use the Wilderness Classoom to connect students in Algeria with classroom in the United States. She will be exploring Northern Africa and she wants students to help her decide where she should go and what you should study.
