A few days ago we were sitting around our campsite and Amy asked, “What makes the oceans salty?” In some ways it would be very handy if the oceans were full of fresh water, because we could fill our water bottles anywhere we wanted. However, we have also noticed that there is much more life here in the Pacific Ocean than we observe in Lake Superior where we normally paddle. Perhaps this abundance of life is here because of the salt water?  We do not know.

Our hope is that you can do some research and help us figure out why the world’s oceans are full of salt water rather than fresh water.

Happy hunting; we are looking forward to your answers.
