Next week we will be traveling along the historic Rainy River, which forms the border between the United States and Canada.  There are a wide range of things we can explore and learn about along the river and we need you to help us decide what to focus on.

Option 1: Ancient Burial Mounds

Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung, which mean “The Place of the Long Rapids “ in Ojibwe and the surrounding area have been used by humans for almost 8,000 years. The Place of the Long Rapids contains the largest group of burial mounds and associated village sites in Canada. We could visit the mounds and learn about how they were made and the people that made them thousands of years ago.

Option 2: Fishing

One of the main reasons that people have lived along the Rainy River for thousands of years is the fishing. Many fish, including giant sturgeon live in the river. We could talk with local fishermen and investigate the fish of the Rainy River.

Option 3: Fur Trade

During the 1700’s and 1800’s the Rainy River was part of the main travel and trade network used by the French Canadian Voyageurs and native people to move furs and trading supplies across North America.  We could focus our efforts on learning about the voyageurs and what life was like in this area during the 1700’s and 1800’s.
