Fishing is an important aspect of life in the North and we plan to focus on fishing in next week’s Notes from the Trail. We need you to help us decide what we aspect of fishing you would like to learn about.

This week we are traveling from Whati to the communities of Rae and Edzo, which are located on the Northern edge of Great Slave Lake. The Tlicho people living in Rae and Edzo have relied on fish from the surrounding lakes and rivers as a major source of food for generations. They also fish commercially on Great Slave Lake with boats in the summer and with nets set under the ice in the winter. We have been doing some fishing and have had some success catching lake trout through holes that we cut in the ice with our hand auger.

What would you like us to focus on next week as we learn more about fishing? Should we focus on commercial fishing in the area, how the local people harvest fish for food, our own fishing exploits, or should we try and learn a little bit about each topic?
