We have been out on the land for a few weeks now, and have had some time to get settled into our traveling routine. The country we are traveling through is very beautiful, and before we left Deline we learned from some of the people in town a lot of the ways that the land has been used by people over the years. This week’s Cast Your Vote is related to the land of Great Bear Lake and surrounding regions. Choose one of the three following options.
On the east shore of Great Bear Lake there was a mine where uranium was extracted from the land for many years. Some of this uranium was used in the development of the atomic bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima during World War Two. We don’t have time to visit the mine, but we learned a lot about it from the people of Deline. Would you like to know some of what we learned?
The landscape has changed dramatically since we began dogsledding on the Mackenzie River a few weeks ago. Hidden within the hills, mountains, and open spaces of the land is a story older than the people who have lived here for so long. Would you like to learn how the land we are traveling through has been shaped by geology?
We carry many of our own supplies with us, but we depend on the land each day to help us survive and even be comfortable in the harsh winter environment. We have been thinking a lot about how the land allows us to travel safely through this remote area. Would you like to know all the ways in which we use the land to survive? We could also share some of the things we have learned about how the Dene people who live here all the time use the land for survival.
