What should we do with our trash?
Join us in the Chatroom on Friday 10/24 from 9 AM to 10 AM CST and 1 PM to 2 PM CST!
Most communities along the Amazon River burn their trash. This means even burning things like plastics. Recycling is not available. We need your advice on how to best minimize our impact on the environment while we are here. How can we reduce the amount of trash we produce? How does your town deal with garbage? Does it go into a landfill or is it burned? Are there ways that you can reduce the amount of trash you and your family produce? Should we burn our trash?
What is your favorite part of the Trans-Amazon Expedition?

I think that you can reuse the things that can be reused. You guys can wash it out and reuse it. If that does not work maybe cut down on your trash.

Empty boxes could be used as a garbage can, but try to stay away from using disposable items. Only try to use things that can be reused. If you have empty bottles, you should reuse it. You could also reuse cans from the canned foods as containers for your drinks.
In Mokena, we recycle. We don't burn trash because of the pollution it causes. We don't think you should be burning your trash either. Some people use composts to get rid of food scraps. You could bury food scraps underground to be composted.

Re-use as much as possible, don't use disposable items. Prepare the correct amount of food so there's no waste. Bring trash with you 'til you reach a city where it can be disposed of environmentally. (Says Atreyu) Send your trash on barges to be recycled. Make compost piles.

We think you should bury as much biodegradable things as possible. Maybe you could save some things like cans until you get to a city that has recycling.

I think you should keep it
until you get to a town.

We think you should try and save as much of your garbage as possible and recycle it when you get to a larger city. Maybe some of your old food could be fed to animals people are raising, such as pigs.

Our town has curbside pick-up of trash and recycling. Some people compost and later use in gardening. Some people donate used items to our art center, and the clothing bank. maybe you could bury the gross trash, so it can decompose and won't stink up the canoes and attract unwanted bugs.
