Should we paddle near shore, or in the middle of the river?
We have been dealing with some windy weather lately. It is interesting how the wind affects the water in the river. On most days, the wind blows from east to west, which is the opposite direction that the river is flowing (right in our faces). This can cause steep waves in the middle of the river channel where the current is the strongest. On the sides of the river, the current is weak, and sometimes it even flows backwards.
We need your help to decide how we should handle these windy days. Should we paddle in the middle of the river, where the current is stronger but waves can be bigger? Or should we paddle close to shore where we don't get as much help from the current, but the waves are smaller? Explain your reasoning.

I think you should go near the shore, because the large waves could tip your canoes. Once in the water, it would be hard to get to shore. If you were near the shore, the chance of the canoes, tipping over are less likely, and you could get to shore easily.

We believe that the canoes should be roped together with the large canoe in the middle. The canoes should weave back and forth on the river to see which area would be the easiest to navigate.

We think the waves would be a bigger problem for you all so it would be best for you to travel along the shoreline.

We think you could paddle in-between. This way you could get a little of both.

I think you shuold paddle to the side of the river because, you can go longer than in the middle because, you'll have harder time to controling your canones.

You should paddle along the side because even though it may take longer, it would be safer and you wouldn't have to work quite as hard.

After some discussion, my class was split on the decision. About half think you should take adavantage of the strong current in the middle, even though it could be a little dangerous. The other half of my students think you should stick close to the banks remembering that slow and steady wins the race.

You should try going in the middle because you would move faster, but if it is too wavy for you, move to the side.
