Should voting be required by law?

Yesterday elections were held in Brazil. The elections were for mayor and county chamber. Everyone in Brazil is required to vote.

Since the presidential election will be happening soon in the United States, we got to thinking about how everyone in the U.S. has the right to vote, but no one is required to vote.

What are the positive and negative aspects of these two different manners of holding an election?

Response to 10/6/08 Dilemma

In yesterday's daily dilemma we asked you how we should shop for our expedition food. Your solution was a compromise really. A majority of you suggested that we go to the market for bulk items like rice and beans, but go to the big grocery store for more specialized items.

We followed your advice and it worked very well. To see photos of both shopping trips, click on Manaus in the Trip Tracker: http://transamazon.triptracker.net
