What does your habitat provide?
Thanks for your responses to yesterday's Daily Dilemma. Many of you had great questions about life in the Amazon. We're going to answer many of the questions throughout the week, but we'll start with some that we know the answers to.
- What is the typical school day like for students in the Amazon?
Schools in Amazon communities are usually one or two rooms. There is usually one teacher for the entire community, and he (they're usually male teachers) teaches all the students from ages 5 to 14. There are usually 25-40 students in each community. Younger students go to school in the morning, and older students go to school in the late afternoon and sometimes even in the evening. The school days are short - about 4-5 hours long. Sadly, school supplies are very minimal. Classrooms have a chalkboard and desks, a very small library of dictionaries and other books, and very little else. Each student usually has one notebook and something to write with.
- How do students and adults spend their free time?
This is an easy one to answer: soccer. Each community has a futbol field (in Spanish it's pronounced fut-ball and in Portuguese it's fuchi-bol, or sometimes just bol). Brazilians are probably the finest soccer players in the world. Since we've arrived in Brazil, we've seen some amazing players, both boys and girls, of all ages, and barefoot.
Boys and girls also fly kites. The kites are hand-made, and quite impressive. It seems like it doesn't take much wind for them to be successful. At night, and in the evening, most Brazilian communities have electricity for a few hours. This means television and radios for some. Others spend the evening visiting with family and friends, usually on the steps of their house. Some people play cards or dominoes. Church is very important for many people in the Amazon. Depending on the size of the community, there is a priest who lives in the community. In other small communities, the priest may visit once a week or a few times per month.

In S. Vt. the habitat is healthy because we have woods and forests to play in and give us firewood. We have clean water. Not a lot of pollution. Clean air. We have fish. No skyscrapers. A healthy insect and wildlife environment. And we work to keep it that way. We have farms and grow a lot of food locally.

We think our habitat is healthy because we plant trees and plants and we recycle what we can. We would like to help other people learn these things in order to make our habitat even healthier.

Food
A lot of ours is made in a laboratory with chemicals. Their food may be more nutritious. We get our food easier then they do. Much of our food has more fat. We have a more varied food supply then they do.
Shelter:
Many of their homes don't have walls. All of their houses are made of wood, but some of ours are brick or stone. We think they might not have windows. Our houses are built to keep out bad weather, cold and hot. We have more temperature control.
Water:
Our water is heated constantly. Our water is heavily polluted with lead and chemicals. We get our water from a large lake (Lake Michigan) and they get theirs from a river.
Who has a healthier habitat?
The vote is 25 to 2 that the healthier habitat is in the Amazon. This is because of pollution, not enough plants, too much sugar and oils (junk food), we need to make things beautiful but throw away the healthier parts, and we waste too much water.
On the other hand (the two dissenters say) our schools are better with more teachers for individual attention, we have better shelters to take care of us, we could get our medicine faster, there are more dangerous animals there than here, and we may have more doctors.

Our habitat is our home. We buy our food from the store, but sometimes we grow vegtables and fruits in our backyard. We get our water from Lake Michigan. Our habitat is a lot different than someone's habitat in the rainforest.

Our habitat in LaGrange is healthy because we are known for recycling and we try to take care of the trees and earth. Our habitat provides food from grocery stores and we get our water from Lake Michagan.

Our habitat has shelters, water, medicines, food, and air which provides oxygen. Also our habitat is very healthy because it's clean and the air is clean too.Our habitat impact is similar to the Amazon rain forest by since we most of the time pollute here we might as well pollute there. The difference is here in Missouri we recycle and reuse things.

Food that we grow in LaGrange are apples, strawberries, and corn. Our habitat provides shelter, air conditioning, elerctricty and water. We get our water from Lake Michagan. Also LaGrange is healthy because we are now recycling in our schools.
