You're looking at a baby two-toed sloth. This particular sloth was being nursed back to health by a man we met who had killed its mother for meat. We asked him if he planned to release the baby sloth back into the rainforest, but he wasn't sure if he was going to, or keep it as a pet. I'm not sure that a baby sloth would make a very good pet. What do you think?
There are two types of sloth found in the Amazon rainforest: the two-toed and the three-toed. We commonly see three-toed sloths, but very rarely see two-toed. The two-toed sloth prefers to live higher in the trees, in the canopy layer, so we often can't see them through the thick jungle.
The sloth is the slowest mammal found on earth. It does everything slowly, including moving, climbing, and even digesting it's food. A normal adult sloth only goes to the bathroom once a week, and laboriously climbs down its tree to do its business.
As slow as the sloth is, it can walk on the forest floor and even swim, though this is very rare.
