Inquiring Minds Want to Know
We will spend the next 10 days paddling from Coari to Manaus. We expect that this section of the river will have a lot of towns and villages. We are looking forward to learning more about how people live in the area. However, we need ideas from you about what we should focus on. What are some questions that you have about the people in the Amazon that you would like us to help answer during our last two weeks in Brazil?
We received some great tips for how to prepare our farina. Thanks to all of you who did some research and sent along some tasty and creative recipes. Many of the recipes you sent would create a cake or bread from the farina. However, since we don't have an oven, we'll have to try them at home. We are going to mix the farina with some chocolate Lara bars we brought from home and roll them into energy balls like one classroom suggested. For dinner tonight we're using the farina along side of some fish that a man donated to us. We'll let you know how it turns out!

Do you get tired of the Amazon Rising Season since you need to paddle during that time and miss out on soccer season, etc.. Do the medicinal plants work? What animal or insect are you most afraid of?

I think that you should ask if they think that anything is different from the amazon and the city's. OR you could ask if any of the people have been to America before
hope i could help

I think you should focus on the animal and plant life in the Amazon. I think that that is the most facinating part of the rainforest.

Here are some questions that our second grade class have for you:
1. Are any traditions that you have seen similar to ones seen in the USA?
2. What is a typical home like?
3. What is a traditional meal? When and where do they eat their meals?
4. What does a rhino toucan look/sound like?

What do they eat?
Do the people there spend more time on the land or in the river?

Question we have.
How do kids and adults spend their freetime? What games do the kids play besides soccer and "tease the cow?"
Are there a lot of English speakers in the villages?
What foods do they mostly eat. We know that fish is probably a common food, but what kind of fish?
Do any outside of the remote villages eat "yummy, crunchy insects?" (I have some sick students.)
Are there a lot of electronics there? Do they have cell phones?
Do places have air conditioning?
What kind of flying insects do they have there? (My same etymolgist as asked the insect eating question.}
Do they only burn wood for stoves?

What do the kids do for fun? Are there jobs besides farming? Are there unusual jobs there that we don't have in the U.S? What sports do they play other than soccer? Do they eat Anaconda meat? Do they play music and what instruments do they have? What are their favorite gourmet foods? Have you heard any good urban legends? Nina wants to know if men and women have equal rights?

Do the Amazon people know anything about the Mata Mata turtle? How do you know what plants serve what function for medicine purposes? Does the medicine taste good, bitter, tolerable, etc...? Do you have any intentions on leaving your home town and coming to the states?

i think that you should focus on how they live their everyday lives...like what they eat, what games the kids play,or even if the adults have play time.
Posted by: allison h. | May 5, 2008 1:51 PM
you should find out what they do on a daily basis.

Questions to ask...
Do you grow food?
What clothing do you wear?
Do you have a library?
How do you know about the plants?
How do you educate your children?
Do you have a school? If so, how many people go to it? Do you have recess?
What is the temperature?

Are schools in session in the rainy season? We really would like to find out what a day at school is like for the children of the Rainforest. If not, maybe we still could see inside of a school to see what it looks like.
It also would be interesting to interview some children to find out their likes and dislikes, their hobbies, their favorites, etc. Then we could see how we are different and alike.

The fourth grade thinks that you guys should study more about some of the strange animals that are there or mabye you could study more about the exotic plants that are there. Another interesting thing you could study about is what are diffrent food that they eat then what are diffrent than what we eat in the United States. You may want to study about what are similar about the school's there, and in the U.S.A and what are diffrent. Have fun on your expedition!
