Mystry Clue #1: I'm the most abundant livestock in the Amazon.
Mystery Clue #2: I have four stomachs.
Mystery Clue #3: I am a bovine.

The mystery photo you just saw is of a cow belonging to a family we stayed with. Raising cows in the rainforest is very common. Just about every village we stop at raises cows for beef. The beef industry is one the largest contributors to the deforestation of the rainforest. Cows need a lot of room to graze, and since the rainforest is so dense and thick, much of it has to be cleared to make way for cows.
One of the best ways you can help preserve the rainforest is by eating less beef (so fewer hamburgers or steaks). And if you do eat beef make sure that it doesn't come from the rainforest. Locally raised beef tastes better and doesn't require as many fossil fuels to ship the beef to your grocery store.
