This is the meat from the Gamitana fish, one of the most prized meats in the Amazon. Unlike other fish who live on a diet of animals, the gamitana is an herbivore, eating fruits that fall into the river. Because it only eats fruits, its meat has a sweet taste to it.

We met this fisherman who was nice enough to sell us his catch. It was unlike any other type of fish I had tasted, and a special treat.
Wild gamitana meat is very expensive, because people all over the Amazon love its flavor. However, the gamitana faces over-fishing in some places. As a result people are beginning to establish fish-farms which raise the gamitana fish and then sell it at markets. These people are ensuring that wild gamitanas don't become over-fished and that their populations remain healthy in the wild.
