Today is our first night on the M. Monteiro, the launcha that will take us to Fonte Boa, Brazil. There are already about 15 people on board, and it is expected that by the time we leave tomorrow afternoon, the boat will be full. It will take us two days to travel to Fonte Boa, and we want to use that time as a good way to practice our Portuguese.
What are some ways to meet new people on the launcha? What type of things should we ask our new friends? What type of things should we tell them about life in the United States?

Last night, we prepared a special meal for Warren's goodbye party. Carol cooked a chicken with potatoes, peas, onions, garlic, and carrots. It was a great treat, but it was really hard to see Warren leave this afternoon. We all will miss his company, as he is an all-around great guy.

I think you should tell them about America and what is going on. I also think you should tell them how somethings are different and the food we eat. You should tell them about the sports we have, too.

I think it is wonderful that you want to practice another language. Some ways you could do this are first introducing yourself and saying "hello," in portuguese, of course. Then you could start a conversation , but stop when you come to a word that you don't know. Maybe, if you're lucky, you will talk to someone who ALSO speaks English. Have fun!!

Ask new friends about the sports they play. Ask them about the things they like to do or their work. Teach them a few English words.Talk about the food that you eat. About the U.S.: We have 50 states and there are great differences in climate, geography, culture, wildlife, politics and governance, spoken accents and so on.

You should talk about different languages and whats it like in Fonte Boa.
In united states we talk in different languages like spanish, french, english, chineese, and japeneese.
Posted by: Mauricio | April 16, 2008 9:12 AM
You should tell them about the USA's languages. You can compare body languages between the different cultures. You should learn how to say "hello", "where's the bathroom" and "thank you" in Portugese.

We think that it might be fun to play card games. This would be a good way to start up a conversation. Then, you could have some food together and ask about the kinds of food they like. If they ask about life in the United States, you might want to tell them about how it is different in the various regions. For example, life is different in the South than it is in the Pacific Northwest or the New England states. Finally, it might be interesting to find out what the people there think about our government and how they think the elections will turn out.

Hi Dave and crew members,
The third graders would like to know what religion they follow. What different animals do they eat, besides chicken and beef. We saw a video about the Mbuti Indians and they hunt monkeys and eat grubs that taste like soft cheese. We know about the fruit they eat, but what about vegatables and do they have bread? In the United States we have freedoms and we buy our food in grocery stores and even at home improvements stores like Menards. We have televisons. We have books in our school and libraries. We ride buses to school and also have computers. We are impressed by the beautiful country and how they respect the nature and animals. We are thinking about you and praying you have a safe trip. The third graders from St. Thomas School.

We think you shoould say hello in Portugese, wave to them, and ask How Are You? Some questions we think you should ask are: How long have you lived here for? Where should we go when we arrive at our destination? Where do you live? Do you like living there? What kind of food do you eat? Has global warming affected the rainforest? What type of government does ur country have? When someone gets sick do you use cures from natural resources or do you use cures from drug companies? What is school like in your country? Our country is a free country. In our country we do not canoe to school we either walk, ride bikes, or drive to school.

I think you should tell them about your family, your childhood memories, or about all your adventures.
Posted by: Julia | April 16, 2008 10:03 AM
Well, you should tell them about the people here and the traditions and things we do here for fun. You should also ask them what they do for a living.
That would be interesting to learn.
Then, you should tell them about the food us Americans eat.
Finally, you should ask them questions about the differences between there and America.

You should just be spontaneous. Go out on a limb. Tell them what you are doing there. Show them what you have learned. Take a nature walk with them and tell them a lot of new stuff. I think they will enjoy it and learn a lot.

We think you should just introduce yourself. We think you should ask them if they know anything about the USA, have a relative in the USA, or if they would like to visit the USA. We think you should tell them about our fast food, video games, skyscrapers, New York City, electricity, and television.

You could dicuss sports with them and ask them what sports they like besides soccer. You could explain the WCO and ask them what their schools are like in the Amazon area.

If you are going to start a conversation, you should start with "Hello eu sou de América e do português praticando do am" which means "Hello I am from America and am practicing portuguese" I hopes this hleps. You could tell them that you are doing this to get kids from all over the world to be interested in the Amazon Rainforest.

We think you should tell them about different foods that we eat. You could ask them what kinds of sports they play and try some of the sports. You could also ask what kinds of different foods that they eat.

I think that a good way to make friends is to be open minded. Then they will think that you respect their culture. You can also try telling them about yourself and things you do in America or tell them how they do things different here. You never know they are probably courious about the differences. You might also try to find about them, thier likes and dislikes. GOOD LUCK!!

One way to meet new people on the launcha would be to ask them questions about where they are traveling to. Also, you could introduce yourself and ask them what their names are. You may also want to explain to them your journey through the Amazon.
You could explain to them the types of food that we eat here. Also, you can share with them the different types of homes that we live in. If they plan on traveling to New York City, you could tell them about all the interesting museums they could visit.
Be safe,

If the team wants to make new friends they should start by having a conversation, this is what you should talk about.
You should start by asking about the animals in the area. Ask if there are animal that are very dangerous or rare, or what animals they hunt for. You could also learn about how to treat the animals.
Then if you get to know them, you could ask them about their culture [way of life]. Find out what kind of foods they eat. In addition you could ask if they have a religon. Also you should find out if you have a goverment [do they have a king? Are they a democracy?].
If you follow this, by the time you get to Fonte Boa you'll know everyone on the boat.
