How should we structure our day?
Today's Daily Dilemma deals with our daily schedule. The way our day is structured now, we wake up about 5:30 AM, make breakfast and lunch (to be eaten later), and try to be on the water by 7:30 AM. We paddle until about 4:00 PM. However, our paddling happens during the hottest part of the day, and our hands, faces, and lips are all sunburned. Paddling at night is dangerous, and we wouldn't see as many interesting things. Could there be way we could structure our day differently so that we could rest during the hottest part of the day? Right now we wake up with the sun, so we couldn't wake up much earlier. The sun sets at 6:00 PM just about every night too. Let us know what you think. We'll read your answers, and respond to them in the PodCast and tomorrow's Daily Dilemma.

Dave took students' sun protection advice seriously. . . he's coated in zinc oxide/sunscreen, he's wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and he decided to cover his blistering hands with his socks!

Do your paddling from 7:30 A.M. to 11:00, then have lunch and rest until 1:00 P.M. and then continue paddling until 6:00 P.M.

They should rest from 12 noon to 2 o'clock. After the rest they should go back on the water.

Maybe you can paddle from 7:30 to 10:00 AM, then you can update us with your daily dilemmas, video clips, etc..., and then have lunch and paddle later on in the day. Hopefully this will help you.
Happy Canoeing,

IT'S TIME TO TAKE A REST! I think you should take a nap in the middle of the day. You've been working all the time.
YOU HAVE A COOL WEBSITE!
Michelle loves it.

We think you should rest for two hours during the hottest part of the day and then paddle until 6:00 pm when the sun sets. We also think flashlights would help you see if you wanted to paddle at night.

you could try to start working earlier instead of waiting 2 hours after you get up

i think you guys should get more water breaks and jump in the water whenever you get hot. trust me it will feel good!☺☻

I think you should wake up at around 6am so its not to hot snd paddle at 6:30-12:00pm. Then rest until 2:00pm,take a break, and eat lunch. Continue your paddling until 6:00pm and eat dinner. Then sit back, relax and sleep.

Our class had a lot of discussion about the structure of your day. Our suggestions are: Get up 1/2 hour earlier and leave by 6:30 a.m. One person make lunch, another make breakfast and eat in the canoe while paddling in the morning. Take a break in the hottest part of the day (with a cooling swim of course!) and make dinner for later during this break. Keep paddling as late as possible and eat after you stop at night.

hi to solve your problem maby you could make your breakfast lunch and dinner all at one time so you dont have to spend all of that extra time cooking all of that stuff and going back to the base where you sleep every day.

You guys should wake up a little bit earlier.
Then you should Paddle until about 2 PM.
From 2-3 you guys should have time to research or have free time.
At 4 PM you guys should rest.

You should bring blankets along. You guys can take turns paddling while others lay under the blankets keeping cool. Then every so often, you can reverse. Hope which ever you choose works best for you.

You guys should keep your same schedule, but you shoucld take a break around like 2:00 or 3:00 P.M. You could always paddle a little more after these times.☻☺

You could wake up at 4:45 and get ready to go padding and then eat lunch during the hottest part, and then around the coolest sunniset part of the day start back up again, then paddle till it gets dark.

you should wake up like at 5:00 to get all your stuff ready?
Posted by: Adrian | April 9, 2008 9:53 AM
I think you should wake up at 3:00A.M and then paddle until 11:00 A.M then rest a little then at 3:00P.M you start paddling again then you could go to sleep at 8:00P.M.

I think you should wake up at 5:30 am then put all your stuff in the canoe. Instead of having breakfast before you go on your adventure, you should have it on your adventure. Keep paddling until 12:00 pm then take a break. Then keep paddling at 4:30 pm for a half an hour then your done.

I guess you guys should go to sleep by 9:00pm and wake up at 8:00am. Afterwards have a meal and make another BIG meal to eat later on(which takes thirty-40 minutes). While you guys/girls are boat paddeling, eat your big meal and go to sleep(which takes 30 minutes). Now you all will have a 8 hour sleep.

U GUYS SHOULD REST 4 A WHILE BECOUSEYOU HAVE WORKED A BUNCH
TAKE A VACATION!
BUT ITS NICE TO WORK A LOT
Posted by: Anonymous | April 9, 2008 10:56 AM
Could you paddle closer to the shore where there is more shade? Could you mount an unbrella on your canoe for shade? When I am working I make my breakfast and lunch the night before I need them. Can you start out with a quick piece of fruit for breakfast and the stop for a longer lunch/break?

ITS TIME TO TAKE A REST!
U SHOULD GET UP EARLY AND MAKE LUNCH BUT LEAV AT 7:00 BECOUSE THE SUN IS HOT HOT
BUT ITS STILL GOOD
TO FIND OUT

We think you should prepare your food at night, so you can hit the water at sunrise. Maybe you could build an umbrella out of leaves and tree bark to shield you from the sun. Pedal between 3-6p.m. The sun should not be as hot. Rest during the hottest part of the day.

i think that if you take a break for lunch around 12 o'clock and rest until 2 and then head back out on the river and paddle to 6 or so.
Posted by: justin | April 9, 2008 11:32 AM
you guys should paddling during the night.
Posted by: Jessica | April 9, 2008 12:14 PM
Some ideas include: Paddle closer to the river banks if there is more shade there. Maybe you could somehow create a shade cover over yourselves in the canoe by using your hammocks. You could get some heavy duty sticks from the forest and rig them up to the canoes and put your hammocks on them for shade. You could also start paddling earlier and stay off the river during the hottest part of the day. Maybe you could take rest breaks throughout the day and get out of the sun a little more.

Our class thinks you should stop to take a rest, eat lunch, go swimming, and upload the website during the hot parts of the day. Maybe you could get the lunches ready at night so you can get up and go earlier. Also each person should be assigned specific jobs during the morning so it doesn't take so long to get out on the water.

Get a slightly earlier start to make up for lost time. We wonder if a canopy over the boat or even umbrellas would help. How about "breakfast to go?"
Posted by: Gary | April 9, 2008 12:57 PM
Hey Team,
8th period class thinks that 10 minute breaks would be great or make umbrellas over the boats. Mrs. B. said to put some sort of canvas over the boats. Stephanie also thought to use leaves from the trees for protection.
Best of luck,
SHJH

Why not wake up at night, and start to paddle when the sun rises.
Posted by: declan | April 10, 2008 8:26 AM
I think that you should wake up at your regular time and then from 12:00 to 1:00 you should take a rest and look around you and see if there is any new animals that you haven't seen yet.
Posted by: Natalie | April 11, 2008 11:13 AM
I think you guys should rest right after lunch. That way you will get some work done and have time to rest! I hope that helps! Bye! And good luck!
