How Should We Say Thanks? printer.gif

After our first day of paddling we stopped at a small farming community to spend the night. There are only three houses in the village of San Isabelito. The people have been very friendly, generous, curious, and helpful.

However, tomorrow we're going to be leaving. It's hard to leave new friends, but that's the nature of traveling on an expedition.

We don't really have much to give, because we only carry what we need and nothing more. We have given money in the past, but we're always unsure how much to give.

Do you have any ideas of something we could do for or give the people we'll be staying with? If we give them money, what do you think is an appropriate amount? Send us your well-written answers!

On Wednesday, you decided that we should look for family farms to stay on as we travel. That is exactly what we did. Here are a few photos from the experience.

We think that you should have a celebration with them by treating your gracious hosts with a special meal like fish or plantains. Maybe you can leave them a small token that you may have from the U.S., ex: a keychain, a mini flag, a special U.S. pin., and give them all big hugs.

Happy Paddles!

It's snowing here in Vermont today, not so easy to camp out, but we think you should cook a meal for your hosts. Maybe give them money based on the number in your party, say $2 apiece for a total of $12. We aren't sure what the dollar is worth there. Ahlian thinks
that you should have a little celebration and dance.

Our class feels you should give them some money ($3-$5) and teach them how to make an American dish.

I think that after you have given a thank you, you should get the address and put it on this website so that some of the students can send them letters saying thank you. I think this will make them happier than recieving money because they know what they did is really nice.

you should give them a good spot to find food like somewhere you have been in the past

I agree with having a celebration and treating the hosts. I also think that leaving them a small token would help them remember you and say thanks.

I agree with Mrs. Hartley...a feast that you prepare would be incredibly kind!

You should give them a souvenir from America and do something with them what they do every day

I think that having a celebration would be a great idea! It would show the people of that village how grateful you are that they let you stay with them. also you could think about how much money you gave in the past. i also think that you should pay them for each night you stayed there so it is like a hotel!
Hope all goes well!!!

I can help them around the house.

I think that you should give them 20 dollars a night for staying there. Also IF you could give them something else I would give them something that you don't need for your trip. Or you could give them some ideas that you use om your trips and that you can have them pass on and cherish for ever.
Well I wish you the best of luck

Help your hosts with their chores for a day. Such as fishing, farming, cleaning, cooking and just spending quality time with them.

I think that you should give them something that they won't forget! they won't forget if you teach them some of the English. a few words and then you should learn some of their language!

you should take a photo and give it to them and how much they treated you you should go back and treat them the same way

help get some food and help get their house clean

give 50dollers or a little thank you gift or maybe if theres a food they never ate that one of you know's how to cook

You might think about giving your hosts a picture of your group so they can remember you. Or you could give them a picture of the school children who will be learning about their environment.
If you give them money, we think an appropriate amount would be $10.
One more idea would be to go fishing and give your fish to the family who you stay with.

I think you should give them something big to be nice to them on letting them stay at there shelter.

You should give them something that they are not fortunate enough to have.

I think you should just make something. Be creative! They will appreciate anything you make I'm sure! Good luck with the rest of your exploration!

I think you should give them $20 for each person you have.

I think you should get them food from the forest to help them out. Or you could help them get food.

you should show and tell them your culture

Here are our ideas: You could teach them about where you're from or about our government/presidents in the United States. As today is the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, you could teach them about him and his message of peace. Giving them any amount of money would allow them to have U.S. money and to learn a little about it. You could catch some fish and then serve the people a delicious meal with them-with fried plantains on the side! You could help them do necessary work on their homes or make improvements to their homes. You could help them clean their houses and clean/beautify the area around their homes.

Teaching is the best gift you can give someone. You could teach the people an American game - rock, sissors, paper, or Hop Scotch. You could teach them a song - Happy Birthday, Take Me out to the Ball Game, or teach them a dance - Electric Slide, maybe the Chicken Dance!

we think you guys should have a small party and give them a token of your gratitude that you guys brought along with you on the trip. We think this because it would be a night to rememeber and we think the gift that they recieve from you guys will be special to them and they would cherish it forever and remember you guys.

You could teach them some English words and give them some money - maybe $10 or $20. We also liked the idea of teaching them some games or songs.

We think that you should not give them money because they might not use United States money. We think that you guys should catch some good fish and then cook it for them.

We feel that a good thank you might be to lend a helping hand at their farm. Maybe you could help them catch fish, help take care of the crops, do the dishes and help cook. You may also share or swap food, spend time and have conversation with the family, or lend them a tool for the night.

You could do their work for a day, teach them games from America, give them an American souvenir, or teach them all about America.

Ally said to leave your address and phone number so they can stay in contact with you. Many of us think givng them money is a good idea. Helping the families with their chores is always a good thing to do when visitng someone. Happy Trails!

what you guys are doing over there is so cool. that is great that you are trying to find out more about the earth. you guys came to colombus west and the presentation was great and interesting . i am looking forward to finding out what happens next.

good luck

We think you should plan a special feast in their honor. If possible prepare foods the way American would so they can experience our culture. We also think it would be nice if you each wrote a special letter expressing how you feel personally. Take plenty of pictures and later send them copies for them to cherish. Have fun.

You should give $20

I think that you should teach or show them something American. I don't think that money would be appropriate. But, if you do end up following everyone else's advice for paying them in money I think that 15-20 dollars seems appropriate. One thing that you could teach them is a dance or song, and one thing that you can show them is an American dish. Be creative and generous, after all they helped you out a lot!

Keep paddling,
Sophie B.

We think it is important that you are good guests and make sure to do some of the chores. It would be nice if you had a few small American type gifts to give them (like a mini flag, a pin, etc.). It would be fun to teach them a funny dance - like the chicken dance or macarena, or sing some songs with them. A lot of people thought you should cook the last meal for them. We couldn't agree on the amount of money. Just thank them a lot.

You should help them grow crops on the farm. They may not know how to do it as well as we do. Or try to treat them to a meal or gift.

I think that you should help clean up their house or make improvements and then you should prepare them a feast of fish and plantains and anything else that they would consider a treat. You should also give them a small token to remember you by or teach them something that we do in America. I don't think that you should pay them money because that wouldn't really show how grateful you are, you would just show that you are paying for the service. Also, they might not be able to use the money that you give them where they live. Then they wouldn't gain anything and you would lose money and you still wouldn't show that you are thanking them.
good luck with the rest of your trip!!!

You could give them some food and help them on their farm.

I LOVE IT IT WAS SO COOL THAT MY BIG BROTHER THINKS HIS SO SMART THINK WHEN I READ IT MY MOM ASKED ME AND HIM A QUESTION ABOUT IT AND I GOT IT RIGHT!!!!!!!

We should say thanks by helping and demonstrating your respect. Also,by being responsible and probably taking care of the world without littering a lot.Besides, we should take care of the animals that are homeless.
