How can we protect ourselves from the sun?
We received a lot of great ideas for how we should celebrate our first night on the river. On our first night we decided to listen to music,do a little dancing, and go for a swim. It felt really good to swim in the cool water at the end of the day. The family that we stayed with does not have electricity on their farm, but they have a battery powered radio. Peruvian dance music played for several hours after the sun set, and the radio was turned on as soon as the sun was up. We gave our hosts 30 soles, which is about $10 for letting us stay in their house. We look forward to using some of your ideas for how we should thank our hosts in the future.

The 8th grade students at Centerville Jr. High recommend that you use super strong sunscreen. We also suggest that you wear hats and long sleeves.

Big sunhats will help protect your face from the sun. Long sleeved shirts, after dunking them in the water will help to cool you off, as well as to protect you from the sun. Did you bring umbrella? They can help to shade you from the sun. Is there a canopy on your boat to help protect you from the rain? You can use the canopy as shade.

Use the leaves as protection from the sunlight. We also think you should wear light colored clothing.

Steven says, "Wear a white hooded hat or an old t-shirt and cut openings for your eyes. You could avoid the sun and rest during the hottest time of the day.

Dear Team,
Can you wear a bigger brim hat similar to a sombrero? How about Bullfrog sunscreen - do have that available? In the future, we found out that some clothing has a certain amount of sun protection built into it.

Stay cool!

We have a few suggestions for keeping the sun off of you. One idea is to make an umbrella out of palm leaves to keep the sun off. We also suggest wearing a hat with a bill and long sleeves to keep from sunburning. We are glad to know you are wearing sunscreen! Why not use the tarp material to make a protective cover as well. Good luck and don't burn!

The 6th Grade suggests first and foremost, BIG hats. You could also use umbrellas or build a small canopy over each paddler. One more possibility... You could try and schedule your paddling time to begin just before sunrise and then take a long siesta during the hot part of the day, and then paddle into sunset. Paddling in the dark might be dangerous so it would be good to stop before dark.

I think you guys should wear hats, apply more sunscreen, wear longer sleeves, and try to stay in the shade when you can.

Where a hat that covers your face and where strong sunscreen, put it on about every one to two hours so you don't get sun burns.
Posted by: Cali | April 7, 2008 9:49 AM
You should put sunscreen on your face and you should wear a hat that could cover your face.
Posted by: Ivan Avalos | April 7, 2008 9:49 AM
My 3rd period, Josh thinks a bigger brimmed hat would be better, if they are available upon purchase in the town. A sombrero based hat would be perfect. Katie thought that maybe you can try to do your work during the highest sun peaks of the day and then paddle the rest of the day. Maybe a nice shaded spot would be nice with a little siesta, if that is okay not to slow you down.
Stay cool, looking forward to the next video clip.
Happy Paddles!

Use bandannas to cover your faces.
You should do anything to keep cool.

I think that you should were hats and long sleeve shirts. Like the people that live in the desert.

TO PROTECT YOUR SELVES FROM
THE SUN YOU SHOULD PUT A HAT
ON AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A
HAT, YOU COULD FIND SOMETHING
THERE.

If there are tall trees near the edge of the river, maybe you can paddle in the shade of them near the bank. Most of the students say that light, long clothing and big hats is the best remedy. Also, a headband is good for dipping in water and putting over your head to cool off. For the canoe, we think the suggestion of a leaf canopy is good. Finally, sunscreen!

I think you guys should wear a lot of sunscreen. Also, don't wear dark colored clothes because that makes your skin hot and you will over heat. Wear sunglasses so you don't damage your eyes from the sun. Wear hats so you guys have shade to stay cool. Make sure you carry around a water bottle in case you get thirsty and have NOTHING to drink.
That's my thought. That's what I would do if I were in the hot, dry Amazon.
Posted by: Mariah D | April 7, 2008 10:14 AM
build a canopy over the boat.
Posted by: mason | April 7, 2008 10:16 AM
You guys and gal should wear bright colored clothes, and should wear sun glasses and wear a hat.
Posted by: Mr. feuer | April 7, 2008 10:27 AM
You could wear hats, use a spray sunscreen, and maybe you should apply sunscreen with the highest spf more often. We feel bad that you have to wear long sleeves and pants when it's so hot. Are there Aloe Vera plants to help with the burn?
Posted by: Mrs. Román | April 7, 2008 11:01 AM
Use an umbrella, put a hat on, take a swim, or sit under a tree. we hope yall figure it out so that your skin don't burn.

you guys should get umbrellas to block the sun
Posted by: luis | April 7, 2008 12:15 PM
Stay in the shadow and run when you are around the sun to the shadow
Posted by: R.C. | April 7, 2008 12:17 PM
They should make a canopy over the canoe. If they are walking they can find large leaves and vines to make a hat or a bonnet. They can use the aloe plant for their present sunburn.

My 7th period thinks to definitely wear light colored clothing. Black attracts sun. Troy feels that maybe you can swim to your next destination during the high points of sunshine during the day. Pulling the canoe along might be difficult, but could work. Interesting students that I have and very fortunate to have them!

We think that you should make sure that you wear hats and sunglasses often. You could even adjust your hat to shade in front or behind you based on where the sun is facing.
Make sure you're wearing the highest SPF sunscreen that you have!

You need some protective gloves for your hands and a large sun hat and sunglasses for your face.
Posted by: libby | April 7, 2008 1:20 PM
We think you should wear very strong sunscreen, hats, and stay in the sun.

Dear Team,
It is opening day for the Sox today - GO SOX! So, Denton thought maybe a baseball hat to cover more of your face area. What about the sides though - Troy thought maybe you can cover your ears with another piece of lightweight material. Casey suggested more applications of sunscreen and Adam suggested sombreros - this would help cover more of your skin.
Hope these comments help!
GO SOX!

The 5th grade wants to remind you to drink lots of water so as not to get dehydrated, but be sure that it is purified. It might be possible to raft your canoes together and build a canopy over the raft. Finally, swimming is good, but be careful not to get caught by any of the floating debris.

1) Wear hats
2) Try traveling in the shade.
3) Wear sunglasses
4) Buy more sun screen
5) Travel under an umbrella. ( maybe attach it to your canoe)
Posted by: Patrick | April 7, 2008 2:01 PM
Using leaves from the rainforest you could possibly build a canopy over the canoes.
You could make sure you have some broad brimmed hats.
Use your sleeping bags or hammocks to rig up a boat shelter.
Use long sleeve shirts for your arms.
Use cloth to cover your faces with.
How about either an umbrella or a homemade type of umbrella using cloth or leaves?

Wear bigger brimmed hats to protect your faces. You could get off the river into the shade more during the day.

You should wear lighter colored clothes and a hat.Between 10:00 and 2:00 the sun is the strongest, so if you are planning to do any work between those hours, you should definitly do it in the shade. Also, if you happen to see a medicine man, you should ask him if he has a cure for sunburn.
Posted by: Ellie Menzel | April 7, 2008 3:57 PM
These are our ideas. Stay out of that sun, or someone is going to get really sick!
205 - hats (white) or bandanas, wet rags, a white sheet or palm branches as a canopy
206 - hats (umbrellas hats?), veils of some kind and gloves, wet cloths, light colors
203 - large leaves overhead somehow, umbrellas, sombreros, clown make-up made of zinc or mud
Posted by: SJC Kids | April 7, 2008 4:08 PM
My idea is to bring 3 umbrellas. Two people could pair up for each umbrella.
The umbrella can shade you from the sun
Posted by: Christopher DeFalco | April 7, 2008 8:39 PM
We think that you should wear hats to protect your faces from the sun.
Another idea we had would be build a little canopy-like shelter for the canoes. You could use the logs from the forest to build them. You could also use the tarps you have to create shelter above you while your paddling.
Posted by: Mrs. Veeser 5V | April 8, 2008 11:21 AM
We think you should wear hats and sunscreen on your face. You should also try to cover up the rest of your body with white so that you don't absorb any heat.
Posted by: Mrs.Veeser 5M | April 8, 2008 1:58 PM
We think you should wear a baseball cap and make a canopy for the canoes made from sleeping bags, twigs, and tape. This would protect you while on the river.
Posted by: Mrs. Veeser 5M | April 8, 2008 2:06 PM
You can protect yourselves from the sun by using a cap for your head, light colored pants, and a light colored T-shirt
Posted by: Carina | April 8, 2008 2:16 PM
You should wear a big huge sun hat, have a thing covering your canoe so you'll have shade, and still have 2-maybe 5 layers of sun screen. I think that should help. Your website is also AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait to see it tomorrow!!
Posted by: Rachel | April 8, 2008 6:41 PM
I think u should wear alot of sun screen or start paddling in the early morning!
good luck!
