An empty seat in our canoe... printer.gif

On Friday, we will begin paddling to Tefe, Brazil where we'll meet our friend and new team member, Erik Hoekstra. The only problem is that Warren is gone now, which leaves an empty seat in one canoe. We have at least four days of paddling before we pick up Erik. How should we manage paddling a canoe with only one person? We are all experienced canoeists, but it is more difficult to paddle a canoe by yourself. How should we solve this problem? What are some ways we could divide the work?

Comments

you could just sit in the middle!

I think when ever you guys stop you should switch who ever has to paddle alone. ☺

Take turns being the single paddler.

Take turns being the single paddler. Recruit someone along the way. Can one canoe hold 3 people and one canoe hold 2 and tie the 3rd on the back to pull along.

Happy Paddles!

Mrs. Oconnor's 3rd graders
You should switch every hour and 30 minutes, so that everyone will have a turn paddling once! Dominic

I think you guys should switch on and off. And good luck to the new guy.♥♥

Tie a rope from the front canoe to the back and the person on the back canoe does some work to divide it equally.

I think that you should switch on who paddles alone every 2 hours so that one person doesn't get tired and left behind.

I think that you guys should take turns being in the single boat. Maybe fine a good amount of time to be in the boat by yourself. That way none of you will get tired and you can still padle the single boat without to much trouble. Good luck! and I can't wait to meet Erik.

Caitlin - Switch off being the single person every time you can stop for 5 minutes. Riley - you could leave one canoe behind and have someone sit in the middle and then when Erik comes he can sit in the middle of another canoe. Or you could just switch off being the single paddler each time you stop.

I think you guys should switch of every hour and if you guyas hit a strong curent you should not paddel and just glide!

I love you guys alot, corey

I think you guys should switch of every hour and if you guyas hit a strong curent you should not paddel and just glide

You guys should sit in the middle and paddle with more force to go more places faster.

take turns

Sit in the middle

I think you should swich the one person in the canoe every half hour or whatever your team decides. So that you share the amount of work.

You should tie the canoe that only one person is paddling in to another canoe. The single person paddling in one canoe should still paddle so it won't be as hard on the other people.

ROTATE.

Can you possibly recruit a villager to help you until you arrive? Take turns with the single paddler. Stay strong!

Have fun!

Take turns, and sit in the middle
or get someone that is a little bigger then the rest of them. They could do it [:

I think that you should get in pairs of 2. Then everybody won't get tired.

Rotate every so often. Or put the strongest person in the canoe you are having trouble with.

I think you should put your strongest person in the one boat. If there is any arguing have a contest and see who's the strongest.

u should ask another one of the natives if they would like to come and go on the expidition

Hey you should put the stongest in the middle then rotate them

Steven says to tow one canoe (remove gear from a two person canoe and make room for a third canoer). You could also trade off so everyone gets an equal amount of work.

tow one of the canoes

You guys could paddle and have shifts where you guys can rest then paddle more when your in the mood. Then when you pick up Erik, paddle some more then have all of you guys rest and start paddling when your all refreshed and then quit the shift idea and start paddling like you did with Warren.

I agree with the other people who posted their ideas that you should switch off, but I think you should do it every thirty minuts. I have conoed before so I know that it is hard to do. Best of luck to you and your team, especialy the new guy!☺!☺!☺!☺!

I think that you should switch off paddling in the one person canoe. If someone needs a ride to where you are going, you can tell them they can have a ride if they help paddle. But whatever you do, if someone has to paddle alone always stay in the middle to keep balance. : )

I think you should put some of your equipment in the empty seat. Because then there will be an equal amount of weight and all of it won't be at the front or back. Then, after two hours switch with someone else. You will take turns sitting by yourself.

I think you should tie two canoes back to back and all paddle one person in the back canoe and two in the front canoe.

I think you should sit in the middle to maintain your balance in the canoe. When Erik comes, one of you sit in back, one in front.

I think that you should tie a rope to the front of the canoe with one person and the other side to the boat with two team members. So the one team member paddling alone won't have to work so hard and balance the supplies.

If that idea can't work then you could always find someone who would want to take an oppertunity to explore the rainforest even for a short four days. That would be fun for them and for you because you can met someone new who knows the area and can help you. Also, you can learn a new language. Have Fun!!!

Ask a local for help with the canoe.

When the person who is canoeing alone gets tired tell the rest of the group so they can switch off.

We think that you should find a rope and tie the two canoes together. Then as people paddle in the front boat, the back boat will be pulled along.

take turn with each other so have fun☻☺

One solution is to tie the canoe in the back and have it empty. Another solution iis the person who is all by themself switches daily.

Tie a canoe onto the back of one and have 3 in one canoe. Would that work? Or maybe lay one of the canoes over the two so that all are working together. Ask one of the villagers to help you until you reach your new friend. Then you can pay him for his time.

Good Luck!

We are assuming three people and two canoes.
One thought (from several different brilliant kids) was to tie the canoes together to share the paddling weight.

My class also talked about two ways to tie them together: One way would be back and front, but another would be side to side like a catamaran.

You might, in any case, need to paddle in shifts or change places in your paddling.

Also, how about putting three people in one canoe and towing the other canoe with the equipment.

We think that you should tie the canoe with one person to a two-person canoe, and have the single person helping the tied canoe along. Or, you could put some of the bags on one side of the single canoe to balance out the weight. Also, you could ask someone you meet to help you paddle the single canoe, and you could pay them with the extra money.

why don't you try to find a local willing to canoe for thee to four days or rotate every few hours

The extra person could ride in another canoe so no one paddles solo. Then tie the empty canoe with one of the others and tow it.

We think you should tie the canoes together and paddle together. We also think you might want to switch out so everyone is rotating being alone.

Switch every hour who paddles alone

I think you should sit in the middle, or you could paddle but rotate every 2 or 3 hours!

P.S. best of luck!!!!!!!!!!

We think you should divide your work by doing most of the day canoeing and spend a little time resting. We also think you should see if you can take some stuff off your canoe because things you don't need will weigh you down. also you should see if anyone on the street will help you.

you guys should take turns

well, you should maybe try to carry the canoe on another or you could paddle for maybe about 10 minutes than find a little area to take a 5 minute break then you switch than so on and so on. i hope you have good luck, sara :)

I think that you should take time paddling and then take a rest every couple hours. Also a great idea posted by sjc kids-Allie C 205 was find a new team member and what she said.

Find a place that sells boating goods and get a second paddle. The person paddling alone can sit in the middle of the canoe and paddle on both sides

I think you should tie the 2 boats together & take turns paddling

:)

You couid rotate and when someone gets tired they can trade.

They shold split up into teams.

i think since you have four people one should be at the end of each canoe.

We think that everyone should take a turn in that canoe. It would be a good idea for the experienced canoeists to take a longer turn.

You could tape two of the paddles together (like a kayak) so that you don't have to keep taking the paddles out of the water.

Can you fit three people in a canoe? If so, you could tow the other canoe behind it.

Let us know if these ideas work!

Maybe the load carried in the single canoe could be distributed to the other canoes so it is not so heavy. We also think you should switch to relieve help that person out.

A way that you all should solve this problem is by rotating. I say rotate because it would be fair and most of all, it wouldn't look like just one person is doing all the work. I think that if you guys rotate, everybody can have there fair share of the job.

We think that you should attach the canoe with one person to another canoe and pull it. That way the person by him/herself is getting pulled and could work on something else, or also paddling.

You could also have the strongest person sit in the middle of the canoe and paddle by him/herself.

Another option would be to connect all three canoes (parallel) together and have the single person in the middle canoe. That person could then use their paddle as a rudder to help steer the "raft."

Every hour you are paddling you switch with the person who has done it by themselves

We think that you should connect all three canoes in a line. The middle canoe should have only one person. This would help even out the workload.

You could also put the three canoes together side by side and have more equipment/bags in the middle canoe along with one person. You would then rotate that person that isn't canoing in the middle.

Another option would be to have one person paddle by themselves in a canoe but with less equipment. It should also be the strongest canoeist paddling that canoe.

We think that you should have the two strongest canoeists in one canoe and attach the other canoe behind it. That canoe would have one person paddling.

Another option would be to have the two canoes with two people in each up front and they would attach the third canoe behind them. It would be in the shape of a V. Every so often, you should rotate the paddlers to make sure you even out the work.

Lastly, you could try to put three people in one canoe. You could move all the equipment and luggage into the last canoe and tow it behind.
