Should we take a boat from Tabatinga to Fonte Boa? printer.gif

For a number of months, we've been waiting to ask this question. It's perhaps one of the biggest decisions we've ever left up to the students to decide for us. So think hard about your decision before you answer.

In approximately two weeks, we will reach the town of Tabatinga on the Brazillian border. Peru, Colombia, and Brazil all share a border along the Amazon River. This area is different than most borders around the world, because people travel between countries freely. The border area is not heavily policed like in other areas of the world. By talking with people who have been to area, they have told us that the area around Tabatinga is not particularly safe for foreigners to travel in. Modern-day pirates still operate in the area, and therefore, there is chance that we might be robbed.

We need you to tell us whether or not we should take a launcha, or water taxi, through this area. If we do take the launcha, we will be relying on a motorboat, which would prevent us from truly accomplishing our goal of crossing South America completely under our own power. In a way, it would be a little like giving up a small part of our goal. And, who knows, the people who we've gotten our information from might be exaggerating the risk of being robbed.

On the other hand, being safe is our main concern. Also, by taking the launcha, it would give us more time to explore the rainforest before and after the "dangerous" area. We could slow down and take our time. If there are places we find interesting, we would have the chance to stop, rather than being on a tight schedule. And besides, we will still complete the overall goal of crossing South America, just not completely under our own power. Even though this decision is still two weeks away, we need to make it now to budget our time between now and then. So, what do you think? Should we take the launcha or paddle the whole way? Make sure to explain your answer by leaving comments.

Please take the launcha! First of all, we want you to be safe, but also, if you are robbed you probably would not be able to continue the adventure at all. You wouldn't have your phone or computers. They could even steal your canoes! ARGGG...stay safe maties!

i think you should take the launcha because it would be safer and you would have more time to go exploring and you wouldn't have to paddle.

I think you should just stick with the goal you started because if you take the launcha then your whole expedition would be void.

We really want you to be safe b/c we enjoy your site so much, but by paddling you are saving energy and that seems to be your passion.

Watch out for Spider Monkeys and ants, especially the bullet ants. Don't forget to shake out your boots and stay safe.

I think you should not take the launcha because taking the launcha would be stopping or changing your original goal. I think you hould take some kind of weapon just in case and I also think that the people in there are exageranting about the pirates. I hope you do well.

I voted that you take the paddle becauseif you take the launcha it's sort of like missing out on the journey and the amazon river. Also it would me more interesting and exciting.

Honestly we think that you all should not take the lanucha... that is being said because your whole point of the expedition was to see all of SOUTH AMERICA... and its a slight chance you will not run into pirates.. But if you do be safe,,,

hi, i thought that you should do what you planned to do the first time you planned so i hope you have fun and if you see any pirates try sending sum pictures to ninos heroes ,mrs.simmions class! bye

i think you should go through the originally way because if you with the launch, you won't see a lot of Peru.

You guys have already proved that you are brave and awesome teachers, it doesn't matter about that small little distance. If you get robbed you may lose your equipment and lose your whole goal. Also, we don't want you to get hurt.

Guys, think about it, it's better to be safe and take a rest than use up your energy and run into pirates. Also, taking a taxi is like carpooling, it saves energy and isn't that a good thing too?

We want you to be safe. I would recomendto taking the launcha. Your stuff would have a slight chance of being taken if you go on by canoe. Be safe and Have Fun!!

We think you should take the launcha because you want to be safe and if pirates robbed you they would probably take your camera and your computer so you can't do the thing anymore.

The majority of the class thinks you should take the launcha. They think that it would be safer and you could save your energy, maybe you could take a nap!

Take the laucha because we want you to be safe!!

We think you should paddle your canoes and not take the launcha because that way you would stick to your original goal and experience more of the rainforest.

We think that you should take the launcha so that you don't have to risk your lives. Also, it is great that it will give you more time to explore in the rain forest. It is always better to be safe then sorry. Good luck from Riverdale Country School ( Class 3M)

Stay safe, plaese! I don't want any one to get hurt on this trip and I doubt the pierates are going to be friendly. I already know you guys are brave, so you don't need to prove it by going through the danger zone by yoursefl.

We think you should stay with your original plan because we want you to obtain your original goal and take risks!

If you take the launcha you may always regret that you didn't take the risk and you didn't obtain your goal. Genevieve says, you need a little risk in life. You don't really know if you will meet any danger. You could hide the valuables. Paddling is better for the environment! The launcha will scare the wildlife and be less peaceful. If the "danger" was physical and your lives were endangered our answer would be different.

We think you should take the launcha because we really care about you and don"t want you to get robbed and even though you would be missing out on some of you'r trip it's ok. don't worry you are cool anyway.☺ Also stay safe!!!!Bye
Megan and Cate ☺

After much debate (and a few dissenters) we voted for you to take the safer launcha.
Matt said, "I think you should take the launcha, because it's safer. It protects you from anacondas, alligators, and other animals. It also lets you sit back and watch all the wild life, instead of having to paddle. It can go at consistent speeds, and you can have more time to stop and explore the jungle."
Tara added, "You can explore the forest and have your mind focused, because you're not worried about anything bad happening."
Abby thought that maybe they will let you drive the launcha.
Everyone agreed we want you to be safe!

One suggestion: paddle near the launcha, so that there is strength in numbers, possibly scaring away the pirates.

hey guys
i think you shuold take the launcha because it is a cool way to stay safe! and who knows riding in a boat like that just might be fun! Also, you can save up more energy since you are not paddling and maybe go for a long hike later
see ya megan♥

I think you should take the launcha because you would be safer. If you took the canoe you might get robbed :-( The canoe might be your original goal, but I would be safe than sorry. :-)

I think that you guys should take the launcha because even if someone was telling you a lie abouit the pirates it is better safe then sorry. I think taking the launcha is a good decision and don't feel bad because you aren't doning the trip all by hand. At least you are trying! Good luck!♥

I think that if you were to do the launcha you would be going off your goal and would miss the opportunity to see the animals in the area. Also it is a very slim chance that you would come across pirates.
