Illegal Logging in the Reserve
The rangers we were with heard the motor nearly 20 minutes before our ears could pick up the sound. They immedietly went out to the dock and waited.
“What is that?” we asked.
“Illegal loggers,” the rangers replied. When the motor boat approached the dock, the rangers waved their arms, flashed their lights, and yelled for them to stop.
Surprisingly, the loggers stopped.
The loggers were on their way into the park, and didn’t have any illegal wood yet. The rangers couldn’t do anything about it, even though they knew what the loggers were about to do.
The next day on the river, we heard the sound of chainsaws not too far from the riverbank. We were sad to hear them, and felt frustrated that there was very little we could do to stop them. The rangers don’t have much power to stop illegal loggers either. Only the police have the authority to arrest loggers, but they don’t come in the park often enough to stop it.
What should we do about the illegal loggers in the reserve? Is there anything we can do back home in the US to stop illegal logging in Peru?
Let us know what you think and why.

Maybe cutting off trade with Peru. Peru could make tougher laws. Buy up the land.

I think you should try to get the police to have at least one police on the river to arrest these illegal loggers and put a stop to their destruction.

i think you should have some park rangers in places where illegal loggers were already spotted

You should appeal to the government of Peru and if you find endangered species the place can be set aside a a forest reserve

U would reccomend ARRESTING the loggers and then putting in POLICE officers!!

I think you should report the loggers to the police. That way if you do that the police will arrest the loggers and you won't have to worry about the sound of the chainsaw and falling trees.

I think that you should contact the police in Peru and thell them that there are illlegal loggers and see if there is any thing that they can do. Back in the U.S.A I don't think that there is really anything that you can do you could probably stop that in the U.S. Cause they are probably using that wood for furnture that they ship here and we buy that firniture here like at Ikea or places like that so we could stop buying wood furniture and other kinds of things.

I think we should contact the police and tell the police that you saw someone doing something illegal. Back at home in the U.S. the police can't do anything because most of this is happening in Peru so technically the police in the U.S. can't do anything because all of this is happening in Peru so how could the police in the U.S. help with the incident in Peru? Well there is one thing that we can do, we can have about 4 or 8 police go to Peru to help the police who are in peru , that way they can gather more and more people to help out with this incidence.

Our class thinks that the US should do its part by writing lots of letters to the Peruvian police and also the government. We think that we should ask the police to patrol the forests more often and the government could pass laws.

I think you should call the Police from Peru.

These are the ideas that Room 303, Columbus West brainstormed.
1. Explain to people how important the trees are to the ecosystem, and how important the ecosystem is to the people.
2. Some people who live near the reserve could be trained to teach others and to be spotters to call the police.
3. Maybe people could volunteer for this job.
4. Perhaps money could be raised back home for this by selling things.
5. More equipment might be used to help like walkie-talkies so that the news can travel faster.
6. Stop the loggers by going after those that are buying the wood.
7. Maybe we students could do a march or something to raise awareness here.
8. Maybe the U.N. or other world organizations could donate money to preserve important world parks and reserves.
9. Perhaps the police could be armed at key locations with speed boats and guard houses (on stilts) to help protect the forests.
10. T-shirts and bracelets could be sold to help the trees.Maybe some of the people there could make things to be sold up here so they don't have to cut down trees and to help awareness of the problem.
11. Perhaps we could put flyers out.

i think u can call the police and tell them wat those illegal loggers are doing because it is not right to cut down animals habitat
Posted by: Anonymous | May 2, 2007 10:57 AM
I think if they do it again you should get the police because it is illegal and they are breaking the law and it is killing poor animals habitat.

I think they should tell someone that lives near there to watch out. The people there can tell them to stop. The loggers will probably be afraid that they will be repoted and stop. I think they should do that because it will help the forest without them trying to guard them and kill there freedom.

We came up with several ideas. We agreed that people in the US should bouycot products made in the rainforest. Other ideas were to raise money to give for people wo they won't log or to hire some officers to work in the rainforest. We also thought forming a petition or trying to convince the government to stop logging would be a good idea. Happy trails!

We think there should be some police stations in the rainforest and hidden cameras. Then you can catch and arrest the illigl loggers.

We think that the rangers should notify the police as soon as they hear the sounds of the chainsaws. This way once they have the wood, they can be arrested

We think you should tell someone that can do something.

EINSTEIN Homeschooling class
Back here in the U.S. FOR STARTERS we could: -pass legislation to require manufacturers to identify wood source(s) and prominently display the source(s) on package, -make it illegal to buy wood from Amazon or wood products made from wood from the Amazon.

I PERSONALLY THINK YOU SHOULD START TALKING TO THEM ABOIUT HOW MEAN THAT IS FOR THAKING THE PRECIOUS TREES. MAYBE THEY'LL STOP.

i think you should send more policemen out into the woods to stop the loggers. If that doesn't work try cutting off trade w/ Peru until they decied to do something about it.

I think you should send more policemen into the area and have people build houses by the areas and spy on the loggers.
Posted by: Sam B | May 3, 2007 1:26 PM
I think you should have more policemen by the areas of were the loggers are and if that doesn't work build fake houses by the areas and spy on them at night.

Keep a safe distance. You don't know what weapons the illegal loggers might have. We don't want you to get hurt. But back here in the states you can spread information to educate people about the types of wood that they might be buying that would have been illegally harvested in the rain forest.

We think you should tell the police to give the rangers permission to arrest illegal loggers. They can't just let them cut down the rainforest.
Posted by: 5s | May 3, 2007 3:05 PM
Make sure the rangers have communications equipment with the police so they could report them, and the police have transportation to get out there and stop it.
Posted by: Sage | May 3, 2007 11:27 PM
Yeah, first contact the police to stop the illegal loggers. Yeah, U.S. can stop it!

I think that you should write a persuasive letter to the president of Peru.
Posted by: Shannon B | May 6, 2007 8:33 AM
You guys could help raise enough votes in the american & peruvian community to station a police station in every sector of the forest. That way the people will be paid to be cops and wont have to resort to logging to support themselves and their families.and they will have more people to keep watch
