Electricity Use
All of the ranger stations have a small solar electric system to power a radio to communicate with other rangers and one lightbulb.
Living without much electricity has taught us how to make do without lights and many applicances that run on electricity. At home we often take electricity for granted.
As scientists study global warming, one thing they are saying is that people need to reduce the amount of electricity they use.
Our challenge to you is to think of ways you can reduce your electricity use. Are there any things in your house that run on electricity that you could live without? How could you limit their use? What are some other ways you save electricity at home or at school?

Stephen thinks that we should all turn off the lights when we leave a room. Amy feels that she can stop using the blowdryer on her hair. She vows to only let her hair air dry. Emily will not straighten her hair and will instead scrunch it. Olivia is going to open the windows and not turn on the AC ALL SUMMER.

We have decided that it is important to turn the lights off when you are not in a room. It is also important to make sure that you not leave all of the tv's in your house on if you are not watching them. If you have more than one computer, try sharing.

In our classroom we have so many windows many days we don't even need to to turn on our lights. At home we can do the sme thing. We can use the sunlight as our light source and always make sure that if a room is empty the lights are off.

We could reduce our electicity at home by not using all the lights, but, use the light coming from the windows. We could reduce electricity at school by not charging the computers as much.

Our class has some good ideas as well. We could turn off appliances that use electricity when we're not using them. We could also use more efficient lightbulbs and sensor lights.

Well in my house we don't have many trees around are house so we get enough light from the sun that don't need to turn on any lights. We barly use any elitricity for lights cause we turn them off at night. Mabey you could try that.

When ever we go to school or out of the house we make sure all of the lights are turned off. Our families also give hand-me-downs to all of our younger siblings and cousins. My dad and I install florescent lightbulbs once every 5 or so years.

Becky is going to change some of the lightbulbs to a more energy-efficient kind. Alan will only walk this summer. He will not get in a vehicle. Rachel will turn off all the lights when she leaves a room. Nick will not use the computer to play games...he is going to play Scrabble instead.

Nicole thinks that we should limit T.V. viewing. Kory feels we need to not play as many video games, and we need to play outdoors more. MaKaylynn believes we should turn out lights when we leave a room and all lights when we leave our home. Austin thinks we should turn off and/ or unplug all appliances when not in use.

Here is our brainstorming from 303 at Columbus West.
1. Don't turn on the lights in the morning if you don't need them.
2. Only use the electricity you need for that time.
3. Go to the pool instead of just turning on the ac.
4. Stop watching so much tv, do a puppet show instead, or board games or skate boarding or biking.
5. Don't use the washing machine unless it is full and use the sun to dry the clothes. The dish washer should not be used unless it is full.
6. Read a book instead of playing power hungry video games.
7. Use the special light bulb that uses less electricity.
8. Unplug battery chargers when not in use.
9. Instead of electric lights, use candles. It's romantic. Just don't burn down the house.
10. Walk to the store instead of driving if you live close. We all could walk more.
11. Don't turn on the heat if it's cool. Wear a sweater or grow a beard (but not if you are a girl).
12. Go camping more often (without the portable tvs, radios, and video games.)
13. Use towels instead of blow drying your hair (or stick your head out the window).
14. Live like the Amish!

We could reduce on energy by turning off the light when we are done in a room. We could also unplug stuff we don't use often.

We came up with serveral ideas like, turning off lights and appliances you aren't using. Another idea we came up with was to use energy light bulbs. If you have to dry your hair, don't use a blow drier.

We can save energy at home by using candles, using sunlight from the windows, and by only using the lightbulbs that are really necesary.

One way is to use candles instead of light switches. Another way is to not be on the computer or any other appliances. One more way is to walk more instead of driving to the store if it is close to you.

I would use a fire because we would lose electricity and gas.
