Ride on the shoulder or the road?

Join the Expedition Team in the Chat Room on Wednesday, April 11th from 1:00 - 2:00 PM CST. Teachers, please log your classroom in as one user. We reccommend using an LCD projector. Hope to see you there!

As we´ve been biking along, occasionally we stray from the shoulder onto the road´s surface. We´ve been very careful about staying visible, by wearing bright colors.

What we´ve found though, is that the surface of the road is much smoother and has fewer objects that could flatten a tire. We´re able to go faster on the road, without getting as tired as riding on the bumby surface of the shoulder. The shoulder has lots of broken glass and other obstacles that could cause an accident. Getting a flat tire while riding can be dangerous, especially when traveling at high speeds.

We know that traveling on the road can´t be done all the time. It´s just not safe. However, cars, trucks, and buses give us more room than in the US. It seems that other vehicles see us from a long way off. They give a friendly honk to let us know that they´re passing. Horns in Peru are used for letting other cars know they´re there as opposed telling them to get out of the way.

Let us know what you think. Should we stay exclusively on the shoulder? Or, if there´s not much traffic, would it be okay to stray out into the road surface?
