Trans-Amazon Expedition

What type of shoes should we use?

For the first two weeks of our journey we will be riding our bikes from the Pacific Ocean, over the Andes Mountains, and into the Amazon Basin, a distance of over 500 miles. We are trying to decide what type of shoes we should use for this part of the journey.

One option would be to wear special shoes designed for biking, which allow you to attach your shoe to the bike pedal. These shoes are great for biking, because they make it easier to pedal. We would not be as tired at the end of the day. The shoes would be similar to what bike racers like Lance Armstrong wear. However, bike shoes are not very comfortable to walk around in so we would probably want to bring a second pair of shoes to change into when we were exploring ruins, hiking to water falls, and doing other things that you tell us to do along the way. Do you think it is worth bringing bike shoes, or do you think we should save space and bike in our regular shoes?

Every school day from April 2nd to May 14th our expedition team will post a problem like the one above for you to help us solve. You will have all day to think about our dilemma, and send us your solutions. Each night our team will read your answers from our hammocks in the Rainforest and use your advice to help us solve the daily dilemma.

The next morning when you come to school you can learn how we plan to solve the dilemma by listening to our daily Podcast! This first dilemma will be open for debate until the end of March when we fly to Peru. On April 2nd we will let you know how we solved the dilemma, with your help, in our first Podcast!
